Thanks Laurent...unfortunately, the past several have barely reached 60% of my Reserve. I'm sure it has something to do with them being raw. If this one doesn't go like three others I've already had up then I'll ship them off to Germany on consignment.
I have see similar disappointing results on eBay for raw talers. Maybe bidders are simply too weary of problem coins and problem sellers on eBay to take the chance on a $300-1000+ coin that is not in plastic.

Yes, but anyone who has checked Cacheman's feedback or spent 5 minutes on this forum knows they have nothing to worry about when they buy from him. Not to mention the comfort of one of the greatest coin/medal websites in existence! (could this be the ceiling the Liteside is always discussing?- I think not- Scott's stuff is too ingrained in the hobby as high end and desireable). Otherwise, eh- disaster for all...
However... acknowledging your statement with emphasis on the word "weary", I am starting to come around to Ajaan's point of view: i.e., authentication in the form of a slab is necessary in order to get "top dollar" for your genuinely good coins/medals when it comes time to sell them.
Ajaan, as a long-time denigrator (sp?) of slabs, maybe I'm sliding your way...
ed. to add: also, Jesters comment: Is it my imagination, or are ebay results showing POOR prices for non-slabbed pieces, and NORMAL prices for slabbed? That's the impression I get, at least. For years I asked this question both forwards and backwards, always receiving uneasy answers. Is what you pay for an unslabbed coin on the internet or elsewhere low enough to accomodate a fair (or Krause ) price for resale once slabbed? And vice-versa... (Throw out high or low and go with the majority average).

Once these talers, and a few other coin odds and ends, are out the door I will only be dealing with medals. I will, of course, still maintain and collect Goetz coin patterns but nothing more. It's just too cutthroat and against the whole grain of why I collect in the first place. This was all stuff I collected at the beginning and before I found my comfort zone and niche in the exonumia world.

I agree - bidders on Scott's auctions have nothing to be weary about (in fact I am one such happy buyer). It was more a generalization about the market. If all eBayers were on level with the cacheman, then life would be grand.
I can't actually find this coins obverse in Krause and you state its a variety and that may be why. But you listed it as Dav# 2617, but the reverse looks more like Dav# 2614. The eagle is bigger and lower than 2617 looks. Thoughts?
I went back and looked at it again and it still appears to be Dav 2617 to me... Dav 2614 doesn't even have an eagle and I could only wish that it were Dav 2715 with only 280 pieces minted. I don't know if you have a Krause German Coins catalog but if you do the coin can be found at the top of page 279, middle image.
Actually it is page 729... As a buyer I am leary when getting into raw higher dollar items that I can't actually see in person and examine with a loop. I guess slabs could be counterfeited too though. Even slabbed I am buying the coin and not the plastic but I may be willing to pay a little more by knowing it is real and certified vs not made in China last month. Especially on eBay...
Maybe the costs involved in slabbing would be less than consignment costs overseas? Just a thought... BTW, I have placed a bid on this auction, if you would PM, or even post it here what your reserve is and if you would refund the costs involved if it gets BB'd after for being non genuine (not that I think it is).

1836 Capped Liberty dime. My oldest US detecting find so far. I dig almost every signal I get for the most part. Go figure...
Reserve is $925 which is, at minimum, 10% below current value. Also, I will guarantee that this piece will not be BB'd otherwise I will absorb the submission costs.
