Guess the grade

I bought this 1893 ZAR Penny on the Bay of E from a trusted dealer. It cost me a packet but a similar coin sold in the Remick auction for nearly twice as much as I paid for it. BTW this coin exhibits a lovely rainbow toning which is not evident on the photos. The 1893 Penny is one of the rarest ZAR coins especially in this grade.

According to Hern there were 27,862 Pennies minted in 1892 and 54,781 Pennies minted in 1893. However there are many more 1892 Pennies then 1893 Pennies this suggests that either 1892 dated Pennies were still minted in 1893 or that most of the 1893 Pennies were melted down. What ever the case may be I am very happy with this coin.

The coin is on it's way to the slabbing factory so please try to guess the grade before I receive the grade from the factory.

Pics aren't quite as clear or well-lit as I would like for grading purposes, but I'd say 55 to 58, more likely the latter.

Again, if it were better lit, I could judge whether or not it was really an MS piece in slider's clothing, but until further notice, I have to agree with the 'shroom and call it a high-end slider. Heck, I will share his AU58 opinion.

But I wouldn't be surprised if you got an MS out of it- that would be nice. Nice coin either way.
