I wonder how long it will be before there are only two currencies and talks begin to create a universal combined dollar / euro.

Don't forget about Asia and the efforts to have a common Asian currency (ACU). This is still a long long way and only after that time might be right to think about a global currency. Not very likely this will happen in our lifetimes!
