A surreal-looking 1925 Buffalo nickel

What an unusual finish this coin has. These images depict it quite accurately; it has an opaque, almost transluscent look. None of my Buffalo nickels are remotely like it. Wanted to show it off...
It's in an ANACS 65 holder.
Happy New Year everybody!

It's from the crap ANACS sprays on the coins to keep them from toning in the holders!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • A very PQ example of a 25 for sure! This year in buffalos for all three mints was known for mushyness, I believe due to the master die. The obverse strike is excellent, with full date, good braid detail for the year, strong feather tips, and full LIBERTY. The reverse strike is phenomenal! I have found that the luster on 1925P buffs often has this very satin-like sheen. Extremely nice coin Guy- I think one of your finer examples.

That's about as good as your going to get for an obverse strike on a 1925.

NONE are real sharp. As Buffnut said, the Master was manufactured poorly.

No coin will show exceptional detail on the obverse.

However, that reverse is quite stunning!

Black Diamond shows a lot of what I call "rugosity" on his hide. One of the first things to look at

when reverse strike is evaluated (according to me) on MS coins, is the smooth area in the center of the Buff.

Then, from there, you fan out and examine the peripheral elements of the coin.

    Happy New Year, Guy

See ya later - I ain't around here much.

  • Another gemmy Buff from Guy!

I agree with Buffnut that the 1925 Philly Buffs have a satin look that this example demonstrates.

Nice strike and nice coin, Guy.

beauty. We usually have more comments than these experts on buffalo nickels, are they all off today?

This is the only date in the series with this type of velvety luster. All 1925's Buffalos have this unique obverse appearance. Despite the lack of pinpoint detail, I've always loved this look.

    Very nice MS65!

    I've seen this effect before.

I suspect it's caused by die preparation so these are always early strikes.

Note that even where die fill appears to be incomplete at the top of the braid it still has this appearance.

  • Other than the 1913...I don't know a lot about the specifics of the "P" mints...most that I see in MS are nice. I do like the "silky" look to this 25.
