HOw do you explain your "need" for a coin to your spouse?

The Christmas season is upon us, and we numismatists know what we need to complete our collections while our spouses oftentimes prefer not to know. If you were to buy yourself a substantial Christmas present for your collection, how do you explain the "need" for a coin or coins?

I compare it to her "needing" a new purse.

So ... let me get this straight - it's either a coin for you, or oxygen for her? image

By giving her a generous allowance for clothes and furniture.

In the past, she never did... however, now that I'm selling, she's much more interested in "what it cost" and " how much are you getting"?

Good thing I'm about 500%+ on what I've sold so far. It tends to soften the " what are you buying " questions...image , which of course she never asked before.

    Sigh... it's a double edged sword.image

My wife complained about my coin buying at times until I lost my job 4 years ago and sold a set I spent $3,500 on for $5,000. Once she saw that 1) I sold the coins for more than I paid for them, and 2) I was willing to sell my collection once the financial need arose, she stopped complaining. I think before that she was simply concerned that I was throwing money away on a hobby at the expense of our family's needs.

I tell her I have this rash and it's highly contagious, and the only known cure is to rub an Austrian Thaler across it.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

    Exactly my situation! image

There is a side benefit: instead of buying everything in the world (literally) for my collection, it's made me decide to purchase coins of my ancestry (French) while selling off everything else which adds up to: necessary income and a higher quality French coin when I do add to the collection.

Not to mention, I'm having a blast mixing selling coins and books on eBay! Lots of fun watching 20 auctions ending 2 to 3 minutes apart for the better part of an hour. Yes, it's a rush and I'm hooked!

I need more coins like a fish needs a bicycle.

    Doesn't mean I won't buy them anyway.

Only tell her about the coins sold that made money. Conveniently forget to tell her about the ones that lost money.

My wife never complains about the money I spend on coins. In fact, sometimes I'll show her a coin or set I really like and she'll tell me to buy it but I won't because I think it is too much money to spend on a coin/set.

It appears that my wife likes to see me happy(Go figure).
I'm sure that it helps that I limit my purchases and that until recently I was the source of all our income.

Show her the coin. If it is a big ticket coin, and she likes the look of it, everybody is cool. This sounds stupid, but I have found that eye appeal works with her. She recognizes it. My only problem is when the rare coin is ugly. Question, if she doesn't think it has eye appeal (read ugly, but rare coin) and it is expenive would you buy it regatdless?

All i tell her is that i'm buying a coin and the price, as long as she knows the basic info about what i'm buying she is happy

Luckily my wife's dad is also a coin collector so she is used to it. We have also got separate bank accounts so the money I earn minus home, living bills etc... I am free to spend on what I like.

Absolutely not, I'd probably find it ugly too. Rare or ultra rare, important or not, an ugly coin is an ugly coin. But even if I thought that it was a pretty coin, I'd still not buy it. No coin is worth that nagging and grief.
