What is a nice Silver Darkside series to collect in Mint State Gem or Near - Gem?

I collect mostly mint state US silver coins and will continue to do so. However, I am starting to hit some of the tougher coins in these series, and hence getting less bang for the collecting dollar.

Therefore, I am looking into collecting a 19th or 20th century darkside series that is attractive in MS, and can be obtained in gem or near gem grade (i.e. MS 64 to 66) for, say, $50 to $300 per coin. Any suggestions?

Thanks! image

afew suggestions... Mexican Peso coins form 1920-1945, French 1 and 2 Franc coins 1898-1920. These are nice designs and I don't think the bank will break. Plus, these can be completed.

German 1/2 Mark and 1 Mark pieces 1873-1918 fit the bill perfectly. Raw pieces are readily available in the $15-50 range. If you like toners you'll find a lot with rainbow toning. They're also readily found slabbed in MS65-68 grades well under $200. The last 2 MS66s and MS67 that I bought were under $100 each. I bought a lovely ANACS MS66 with pastel lavender toning for $45.

    Fun series to collect!

Swiss 1 France coins is also an option.

He'll be dead before he completes it, the series started in 1875 and is still in production with no plans of changing the design. image

2 rappens are fun, inexpensive and feasable if you like bronze.

How about Spanish 5 peseta silver crowns from the early 1870s though the end of the 1890s? Relatively low prices, with several different obverse designs.

I like both series. The 1920-45 pesos are fairly inexpensive in near-gem -- I can't think of one that might cost as much as $300. The French sowers have a few stoppers that might run into the $500 per coin range.

Victoria Hong Kong and Straits Settlements 20 cent pices are great to collect if you have lots of patience and hunderds of thousands of dollars on hand.

For your stated collecting goals, I'd look at QE II silver dollars from Canada.

Gothic Florins - they also require a lot of $$$$ these days, but they are lovely.

They do look quite cool (found from a sig-line):

Canadian Dollars is a great idea too... Some of the George VI coins will be $$$$ in high grade like the 1948. The 1946 is underappreciated in 64 and higher

    A few ideas:

    British Shillings
    German One Mark
    French One Franc
