    Yes, it is the withdrawn type (ESC 1752B). Allegedly rare with possible 1/2 sov. obv. die but seems to occur quite a bit more frequently than ESC reports so a good (!) find though not great.

    J.E.B. are the initials of the designer of the Jubilee bust coinage, Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm.

    How do you know it is the Withdrawn type?

    Uhh, because Spink and ESC authority says so. The reverse was too much like the 1/2 sov.

    Sorry to sound stupid,, but what do I look for on the reverse?

    Crowned shield versus the crown over oak leaves type of earlier years that was reverted to. I wish I was better technically and could send a link. Will try a little later maybe tomorrow.

    The "withdrawn" type was withdrawn from further manufacture because of the possibility of gold coating the sixpence and passing it off as a half sovereign. The remaining issue of 1887 used the traditional reverse that 1jester so kindly posted.

    There are three varieties of this coin:

    * The standard version, where "JEB" is below the truncation of the bust, which you have.
    * "JEB" on the truncation - worth quite a premium, about 8X.
    * R of "Victoria" struck over V - worth quite a premium, about 7X.

    I can't tell 100% from your photo if you have R over V, but it looks highly unlikely that you do.

    That looks like a nice piece.
