They're legitimate collectibles all right; there was an entire series of these. I was laughing at the ludicrous price and the wording in the auction.
About a year ago there was a very comprehensive collection of these for sale on Ebay (90+ pieces if I remember correctly), but the asking price was just stupid.
These are found in different denominations with different metals in the center.
The more common ones (which this auction is for, albeit in very nice condition) can be found for $5-20. I have one of this type that I picked out of a junk box...
That's a nice model penny, actually, and the seller can be forgiven for not knowing what it is, since there is not a lot of information about them out there. Of course, his overoptimistic price is indeed laughable.

Actually, I think that you are referring to MY collection that I sold earlier this year... over 130 pieces.... including 3 of the Rarest VARIETIES.... I ended up selling the 3 rare ones seperately and the remaining coins as a lot..... totalled out to a bit more than what I was asking for originally......

I have one, and they go in the $10-$20 range in that condition, I got mine from Spinaker...
