It is a modern fantasy issue. The mintage figure may be correct. Many of these "pattern" listings are misleading since the coins are not in fact official patterns but modern, privately-issued fantasies. That's the bad news.

The good news is, they aren't totally worthless. The "Unusual World Coins" book lists them, and many are worth $30-40 catalog. More realistically, I would say a real-world value of $10-12 at the very least.

I have an Irish one and paid about twelve bucks for it, knowing it for what it was. I thought it was rather neat.

Now I am just tired of seeing the damn things all over eBay. They get in the way of my normal keyword searches for Victorian coins.

Twenty bucks seems a tad high for that but that is still below catalog, probably. Probably not the best purchase in the world, but it could've been worse. At least he didn't pay hundreds of dollars for it, thinking it was a rare pattern. And like I said, though they ain't supremely valuable, they aren't worthless, either. Some people appreciate them in their own right.
