Took a Drive to PCGS This Afternoon

Figured I could save on mailing several boxes of coins to them and pick up a Teletrade coin return at the same time (they are a matter of blacks away form each other). Now, I have to wait for the results, always the hard part we all know. However, a few boxes will likely arrive pretty quickly. Here's what I sent.

11 economy raw grades with VAMs, with no minimums. I had to pare out a number form my original stack that might have light cleaning and things like that. Ended up with 1878 V-84A, 1880 V-11A, 1880 V-23, 1887 V-2 (7/6), 1892-O V-7, 1896-O V-19, 1921-D V-1N. All were cheap cherrypicks and I believe 100% slabbable. The 1887/6 should get a PL designation too.

2 express special crossovers at the same grade or higher. They are both older NGC prooflikes. PCGS is tough on those PL/DMPL designations. I think these two have good shots. They are my 1892-O 64DMPL and 1903-S 65PL. This is a real finger-crosser. If they go, I have others to follow. I didn't send the 92-O until now as I actually like the look of it in the NGC holder with the white background.

5 economy ANACS crossovers, uncracked. I have never cracked a coin out for crossover submission, perhaps foolishly. I lowered the minimum grade from the current grade though I these 5 are all properly graded. The five are 1880 V-6 (AU55), 1899-O V-5 (VF35), 1921-D V-3A (MS63), 1922 V-2C (AU55), 1923 V-1D (MS62).

1 PCGS express special regrade with VAM service -- 1878 V-14.4A, currently MS60 with a shot at MS62 and no way MS60.

5 PCGS slabs for just VAM attribution. 1878 V-5 (MS64), 1878 V-203 (MS64), 1887 V-12A (MS64) and I know it's common, 1926-S V-4 (MS62), and 1934-D V-3 (AU50).

8 crossovers with variety review to use up my freebee certificate for this year. I went through my nicest VAMs as close to the $3K valuation threshold as possible that also were perfect crossover candidates. Of the many, I ended up with 7 NGC and 1 ANACS. I think they should all cross (even with PL/DMPL) designations in grade, though I did drop the numerical grade on the ANACS by one. These are all fabulous coins that would be great in PCGS holders. Here is that list: 1878 V-9 (N 60PL), 1878-CC V-11 (N 64DPL), 1879-S R78 V-52 (N 64PL), 1885-S V-6 (N 65), 1886 V-17 (N 65DPL), 1886-O V-1A (N 62), 1887-O V-3 7/6-O (A 62PL), and 1927-D V-2 (N-64).

I figure the express specials should be in my hands within 2 weeks. The VAM attributions of PCGS slabs should follow pretty quickly. The 8 CLUB coupon specials are often processed pretty fast too. Hope the disappointments are few and the rewards many. The dice are cast. At least I filtered out all of those cleaned ones I picked up over time from eBay and elsewhere.

Must be nice to have a TPG within driving distance.

Hehe. It's an hour away in Friday So Cal traffic. So it is nice in one way and not so nice in the other. (Maybe lobby day Wednesdays would be better?)

Oh, the one thing that did surprise me is that the other folks I saw there largely seemed clueless in filling out the submission forms and some had little concept of service levels. I figured local dealers and people in the know would be hitting these lobby days mainly. Perhaps those sorts are actually wiser than me and don't....LOL. It was probably a wash in the savings on registered mailings to them (from San Diego) when I figure out the gas I burned up. Saved another $15 on the Teletrade return too though.
