I think my picture taking washed out the coin.... chard sent me this so I didn't think to question it.
    Im emailing them image

proof should have mirrored fields and frosty devices correct?

Yes, problem is that when they began making the bullion issues again in 2000 after a 18 yr break, they made them with highly polished dies.

So mirror fields are not uncommon on the BU issues, but the devices are also quite polished.

Here is my 2000 BU Sov,

It has the cameo effect of a proof in some lighting, but the devices do not have the strong frosting of the proofs.

Nice coin (even if not a proof, at least on the pictures)! A gold sovereign was my first gold coin image Ever since that day I have a special soft spot for the design.
  • Did you post the wrong picture? I don't see how that could be a proof. I'm even seeing what looks like cartwheel luster (the way the light is reflecting on the coin in the pics). Hyperion, we need new pics or I'm going to authorize another shunning at the OFR image

Not a "fancy pic," just a pic to show that it's mirrored. It's wild how different pictures can represent a coin in totally different ways!

Those have such a lovely reverse. Not a big fan of the old lady on the obverse though. image
WTB: Eric Plunk cards, jersey (signed or unsigned), and autographs. Basically anything related to him

    Negative BST: NONE!

plot thickens, I took this to a dealer and she said she couldn't tell definitively if this was a proof or unc, so she called another dealer who said that a BAD proof could just look like an unc. to me the fields are mirrored but under a "haze". a second person in the store (also a small dealer) said he thought it was just a bad proof and it should be in my rights to request another. I have an email back to Chard, referencing these photos, but I haven't heard back from them but it's only been a day. I might call them.
    Ill post updates.

I feel kinda like an idiot now, but Ill leave this post up as an educational tool.
  • Nice coin, but I have to agree that it looks BU. It shouldn't be that hard to tell proof from BU with sovereigns. Did it come with a presentation box? The modern proof sovereigns come with a presentation box and certificate. The BU's are either raw or in a cardboard, postcard type holder.

Cruzi has it spot on, the frosting gives it away.

Here are pics from Royal Mint website

Was it an ebay transaction? Even so the Chard ebay listings are very general when it comes to sovereigns

Chard listing was very specific, I have a chard receipt that says 2000 Proof Sovereign image

How does your coin in hand look compared to the pics from the Royal Mint?

This has got to be BU, or maybe an as-yet unseen Reverse proof image Hopefully chard will accept the return no hassle.
what SUCK is, I replaced it the hour it came in with a properly fitting AirTite, and I haven't been able to find the original capsule, it's driving me nuts.

For the record, Chard received said coin... agreed it was BU... and has sent out a replacement. They have no idea how that was shipped to me instead of a proof !
Ill Image teh real proof when it comes in !!!

thanks everyone here for their candor ! Im glad I was able to correct this issue with the seller. I still feel like a knucklehead but Id rather correct myself, than stick to my guns and remain a fool !

yet another reason why this is becoming my favorite coin-related forum.. anyplace !
