I tend toward removing the "film" on the surfaces, but they may not be able to or even try with bronze. What is the value?
  • The last auction on eBay PCGS MS63BN $817.56

eVEN WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BA A FILM, YOUR CENTAVO LOOKS BETTER THAN THE EbAY COIN....forgive the caps.image

Let me guess, you bought this one for $5 in a junk bin.image
  • Just drop it in some acetone for a few minutes, then send it in. Just do it with care and cotton balls. That should get rid of any haze/film. What's up with the discoloration near the L on the obverse? NICE COIN

I'd say give NCS a try. It has good looks as is, but I have a feeling they can considerably brighten it up by removing the dirt/smudges. The toning streaks probably can't be touched, though.
  • I think this coin has a chance for at least MS63 after conservation. I will try to have it conserved and update this thread with the results. The spots on obverse looks like some kind of toning and should come out after conservation.

Is some of the obverse streakiness I see part of the alloy?

  • The coin has been conserved and graded by NGC, now on its way back, can anyone guess what the grade is? I will post the after conservation image when I get it back.

  • Prior to conservation, the coin was in the PCGS holder graded AU58BN, and after posting it here asking your opinion, I cracked it and send it for conservation. Now that is graded, it is now in the NGC holder MS64BN.

Wow, a conservation that eliminated wear.... NCS sure IS good...!

Great result on a fine coin though, can't wait to see the conserved piece....

    image is right!

Can someone please explain this to me? How does a coin jump 6 points from almost unc to choice unc with conservation? Eye appeal? Luster? PCGS vs NGC?

Funny that I had a similiar experience with this date. Bought a slider for around $250 a few years ago and came back NGC 62 RB. A shocking but pleasant surprise!

I have some AU58 coins I'd like conserved to MS64, also. Where do I send them? image

Mr. FilAm, I believed PCGS graded it AU58 is because of the dirt/smudges on both obverse and reverse. There is a lot of lusters present covered with some kind of haze film. This is what I would do.... I will try to crossed it to PCGS without cracking it, to see if conservation makes the difference.

  • I'm sorry, but what I meant to say was that the 1915-S centavo was once considered a great rarity, and a key to the series along with the 1914, '16, and '18 Large S's ... the 1920 and '20-S, and the 1917-S overdates.

But now I'm becoming convinced that the 15-S is more common than I had believed and that it's only a semi-key, not a key. And then the $800 smackers realized on e-bay for an MS63 was not unreasonable. Not a great price but a decent price.

In any case, jetblack, it was a real coup on your behalf to get the coin upgraded from AU to MS64. Congratulations!

    Warm regards,

Looking for great US-Philippine coins, the funnest and probably hardest US sets to complete. I collect varieties and neat error coins as well as the regular business strikes and proofs.

  • Wow! Lyman Allen does not list a variety but Ray Czahor has one listed as s/s to the south. This confirmed that s/s exist.

  • Wow, and you got your 1917/6-S to cross, and that's a great rarity. Congratulations both on the wonderful upgrade of the 1915-S and the cross over on the overdate!

1917/6-S was crossed twice, first it failed for DNC then the second turn around put down minimum grade of AU55BN but graded AU58BN anyway.
