General Question for Collectors of Canadian Coins

Don't mean to pry, but I was interested in knowing whether most on this board that collect Canadian coins happen to be Canadians or other nationalities. I was interested in whether there was much of a collector base for Canadian coins outside of Canada.

If you are willing to post this information I would be interested in knowing the answer.

Thanks

I think there is a base outside Canada... understanding what that base collects and what the preferred grades are is a separate question

I am a casual collector of Canadian coins. Living in Minnesota I have collections of cents thru quarter pulled from circulation. I occasionally purchase curculated large cents and fishscales as well as uncirculated halves and dollars. I have also purchased a few Canadian NCLT.

I also have a few Canadian tokens and pre-confederation coins. image

I enjoy Canadian coins and appreciate the aesthetics of their designs, but only a small portion of my collecting budget ever gets spent on Canadian material.

I think a number of collectors along the northern tier of states are not that much different from me and have some Canadian coins (though with little value) in their collections.

I am an American. I collect Canadian coins almost exclusively. My grandparents were born in or around Quebec. They moved to the USA during the Great War to work in the mills of Mass and RI. When I started collecting my grandfather gave me a handful of old Canadian coppers. I especially was awed by the large tokens of colonial Canada.

There is quite a large base of Canadian collectors in the US. Mostly along the border states or who like me because of family ties. My guess is that 10-20% of the CNA membership are US citizens.

I'd like to finish it some day but the pieces I need now are the pricey ones.

I'm first generation American and, until a few years ago when my sister became a citizen, the only American in the family tree. My dad flew with the RCAF in WWII was discharged from the service after the war, headed to the States for College, then settled in NJ to work for a Pharmaceutical Co. I arrived on this earth in NJ. Moved to TX at the first opportunity.

I'm a hobbiest on a slim budget. I collect Canadian toners of 1958 - 1973 vintage because I like affordable toners.

I'm a US citizen living in the WNY who assembled a date set of Canadian coins. I once read, don't remember where, that there are more Americans collectors of Canadian coins than Canadian collectors. Given the respective populations, this makes sense.

  • Hi,

I live in KS and I collect Canadian coppers. For the last 40 years I have collected mostly US (in particular Lincoln Cents) but about 5 years ago some dealer at a show sold me a Canadian Large Cent and I have been hooked ever since. I particularly like the Edward VII & Geoge V large cents so if anyone has any high grade (MS65+) PCGS or NGC RD or RB Large cents that you are interested in selling please PM me.

    Hey! A fellow Keystone Stater!!image

I have lived in PA most of my life. I started out collecting circulating U.S. coins in Whitman blue folders, and branched-out to Canadian as I found them in change.

After many years of dormancy & jusyt keeping up-to-date, I discovered this Forum, and developed a whole world of friends & trading partners, which rekindled my interest in Canadian coins among other things.

But I still house them all in my Whitman folders! Large Cents, small cents, fishscales & nickels, dimes, quarters, halves & silver dollars, loonies, & toonies! Anything I can find from circulation and trades!

I believe Canadian coins are much more adventurous and eye-appealing than their U.S. counterparts these days, although BOTH countries seem to develop a lot to sell at profit vs circulation these days......................

    Always looking for reasonable trades!

  • I'm American and collect Canadian. I think completing the set from 1858-1952 is doable, I wouldn't even dream of trying that with US coins. Plus Canadians are good people with a respect for others that too many Americans are lacking. Perhaps my collection is a tribute to them.

  • I live south of Boston in New Bedford, my grandparents on my Mom's side were French/Canadian. They both emigrated here for factory work/ textiles.

I always put aside any Canadian coins i find in change... and ive picked up a few on ebay that have nice color or designs. My Grandmother was from France and her husband was from Montreal.

I love Canada! Great people, nice country. We could learn a thing or two from them.

Absolutely. You'll find plenty of "Greysiders" here. Many are in the Northern US, but there are collectors of Canadian coins everywhere. As with British, Irish, and German coins, Canadian coins have plenty of devotees outside their home country.

I don't exclusively collect Canadian coins, but I have some pre-confederation tokens on my Holey Coin Vest, and this little Newfie on my Holey Gold Hat. Plus some 1901-dated pieces in the 1901 Victorian type set I am building for my daughter.

  • The owners of the finest 4 out of 5 Large Cent collectins are all in the states. I have mortgaged my house twice, sold all my investments, stripped my retirement fund, sold my children into Columbian coffee plantation slavery, and buy all my clothes from Salvation army to buy as many PCGS Canadian Large and Small cents as I could find. If you have any for sale, will work weekends, holiday, shine shoes, roof houses, change depends on morbidly obese gastric geriatric patients to buy more!

I collect them because I studied at a university in Quebec for one semester, because my grandmother was born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, because I live in the Northeast U.S. and get to visit Canada frequently, and because I think some of the coinage is very very cool.

I collect Canadian coins, but only the ones with different bear designs on them.
