Amazing (though not surprising) how different this coin looks in 2 auctions, 6 months apart

Here's a 71-CC dime in an NGC MS61 slab for auction by Heritage:

Here's the same coin in the same slab, auctioned 6 months ago, also by Heritage:

    It's just the lighting.

both pictures suck. That's too bad, maybe the coin does look nice in hand.

Heritage's imaging is wildly inconsistent. I have noticed the same phenomenon on multiple occasions.

Actually, the second photo isn't so bad. As a potenial bidder, it tells me what I need to know -- marks, color, rub (if any), etc.

I wish the same firm's pictures were a little more consistent.

the digi-pics look different, but how do you know the coin does? you seen it?

I think some if the difference could be attributed to the human ability to learn & experiment.

1 possibility is they recognize the need for better quality photos and are trying to meet that demand, in this particular case I don't think they "Got it right" but it looks like they are at least making an attempt to change it for the better.

Be patient....I know its hard in this instant gratification world we live in...

DK - I wasn't implying the coin looks different (though I suppose it could if MOC got hold of it...) The point of my post was the ohotographic inconsistency of the same auction house reimaging the same coin in the same holder 6 months later.

IMO, the second image is probably closer to reality as the first one is clearly underexposed with the gray slab material.

So, is this a 1-shot kind of thing, or maybe they are getting a bit better with their imaging?
So many people jump on pictures at the auction houses.....maybe they are trying to improve, and, for that, they are getting jumped on again?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Heritage intentionally provides pictures without showing the holder, and then pictures including the holder. I think they simply want to give us two different light views. I much prefer Heritage pictures showing the holdered coins.

Same coin different lighting - I can do the same thing just by altering my lighting angles or locations.

garsmith...maybe the hobby needs to take a better look at diamond grading....there are standards for the kind of lighting.
