Opinions sought for both picture style and grade on 1937 Buffalo

I mentioned in a post a few days ago about some buffalos I bought raw on eBay a while back. This is one of those coins. I'm actually messing around with the picture taking so I was looking, first of all, for an opinion on which type of lighting looks better and secondly what your opinion might be on the grade.

The first set was taken with the lighting at an angle. The second set was taken through a "light ring." (The kind used with microscopes.) Neither was adjusted using photoshop.

As for the grade, as I mentioned, I bought it raw on eBay. I also had it "opinion graded" by Randy Campbell from ANACS at two different coin shows a year apart. (Both times he gave it the same grade.) I'll post what Randy thought in a little while.

All opinions appreciated! image

The first set of images is more attractive.

I would say AU based on what seems to be a lustre break on the bison's hip.

    AU-55, I think.

Those are not good images by which to guess gradesimage

The first one looks like a 66, maybe a 65. The second one looks AU55, but I am guessing it is more untrue-to-life.image

I think the first set looks pretty true to life. The only reason I like the second set is because I'm fascinated with that microscope light ring! image

The first set of pictures looks best to me.

I'm still learning so this is just a guess.

95% of the coin looks MS65; but I've got to agree with Amanda that the hip shows rub. You would think that the coin would show more wear on other areas if the rub on the hip is like it is. Maybe it was in an album and someone kept opening the slide and it rubbed the hip? Probably never been actually circulated though. I'll say the Anacs guy said MS64.

The first set of pics is more flattering. The hip area which has been mentioned does not look worn to me. It looks to have a bit more of the patina/toning/discoloration seen over the rest of the devices and fields, but I think the coin is mint state and I'll give it a 64. It's hard to gauge the luster from the pics, though, so it's really just a wild guess.

The 1st. set IMO probably depicts the coins actual look more accurately. The 2nd just does not look real. jws

First set is too lit, to me... looks like the coin is plated in something.

The second set is too washed out...

The coin does have a lot of lustre so I'm not sure how to photograph that without getting a lot of reflection.

As for Randy's opinion, both times he looked at it, he said the exact same thing "60-61." Now personally, I don't understand that grade because the coin does have a nice strike. If it's gut rub, then I would think it would be AU-58. Withouth the rub, I would think 64-65. But either way, I have to give him credit for the consistency of two different opinions a year apart.

As I also mentioned earlier, I bought the coin raw on eBay advertised as a 65. I paid $17.60 for it including tax, tag and title. It was one of the cheaper coin buying lessons I've paid for and still not a bad coin. image

Personally, I'd grade the coin AU58, but 60-61 is a typical market grade the TPG's give a coin that is technically AU but has great eye appeal.
