Nearby Community College offering "Advanced Numismatics" continuing education class
Southeast Community College in Lincoln, NE is offering an 8 week class called "Advanced Numismatics". Here's the course description:
"ADVANCED NUMISMATICS (noncredit)
This is a course for coin collectors with established collections. The student should have a basic knowledge about coins and coin collecting and wish to learn more about numismatics with emphasis on research, methodology, numismetrics, collection managment, and appraisal. The instructor is the former director of the American Numismatic Association Money Museum. Students will be using their own collection as their research base.
Course Number: LLLX1200 Tuition:$89"
The instructor is Larry Lee
Well, what do you think? Sound worth while? A bit erudite? It's only an 8 week course, (meets once a week), so I don't know how deep it can go.
It would be close to a 2 hour drive (there and back) so I want to make sure it will be worth the time and effort.

I'd do it, although a 2 hour drive seems long. Heck, smoetimes that's 20 miles in LA

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

<< <i>One question. What is "Numismetrics"?
Heck if I know, but if you google it, the only match is the course catalog for your course. My guess is he just invented it?
From Wiki:
Metrics are a system of parameters or ways of quantitative and periodic assessment of a process that is to be measured, along with the procedures to carry out such measurement and the procedures for the interpretation of the assessment in the light of previous or comparable assessments. Metrics are usually specialized by the subject area, in which case they are valid only within a certain domain and cannot be directly benchmarked or interpreted outside it.
So I'm guessing it has something to do with the procedure of grading (Measuring). Maybe the whole class looks at some data and the combination is numismetrics?

That's a good idea.
My guess is that it numismetrics deals with coin grading and grading standards.

I think you're right! No wonder it's "advanced numismatics", it's so advanced no one has even heard of one of the subjects before!

Well, at least we know what he's been up too since he left the ANA.
