Do you ever buy a numismatic item just to get the holder?

I sometimes see coin/medal sets in nice lucite holders going for so little that I buy them just to get the holder. Does anyone else do this?

Price lucite holders today and you will see what I mean.

I can see doing that for paintings.... have not even thought of it for coins. Frames are VERY expensive, especially good ones. Cheers, RickO

Being that Conder101 & I were the first that collected slabs by the variety we have bought plenty just for the holder. I don't use Lucite but I know what you're talking about. Umm...that's a good case for "Buy the plastic not the coin!" image

yes - a capitol plastics holder for merc dimes. it lacked holes for the overdates, which is why i wanted it. there were crappy coins stuck in it at the time

A gold coin to get the PCGS Regency holder.

I was at a Long Beach show about seven years ago and saw an NGC Black Insert Slab with an MS64 1940 Washington quarter. I thought it would be cheap but the dealer wanted a big premium for the holder ($200 if I recall.) I passed.

Some original holders bring really good money in pristine condition. If the coins
in a set like a 1928 Irish proof set are badly tarnished you can pay much less than
the value of the case which is worth about $50. Many people have nice coins and
    want the case for them.

This is partly because the nice coins survived only because they were removed from
the set. Look at something like a 1975 Japanese or a '68 US mint set. There is 100%
attrition on some of the coins in these sets and few people cared enough to take the
    coins out.
