What's the oddest method you've ever come across to artificially tone a coin?

I think the oddest method anyone ever described to me was feeding it to a cow and waiting for it to come out the other end.

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • The Cheech and Chong method. Heh.
  • I was reading once about the counterfeiters of ancient coins in Turkey or Bulgaria or somewhere shoving their fake coins down the throat of roosters.
After a month or so, they'd kill and eat the bird, after removing the coin from it's craw.
The coin would have a beautiful natural ancient patina to it.

The oddest method I have heard is making a surgical incision in a young melon, inserting the coin ( silver ) and using botanist tape to seal the puncture. Then wait for the melon to ripen on the vine.

Different melons, soil and water chemistrys will produce varied colors and patterns....
