The Confederate States of America Golden Cavalier

Or, the coin that never was.

This is a recreation of the 'Gallier and Esterbrook' 20$ Gold pattern. This piece was made from a written description that was mailed to Secretary Memminger, all that survived of the coin.

The obverse depicts images of liberty and agriculture associated with the Confederacy. The reverse has links of chain representing the states already seceded and empty links as an invitation to the border states.

The denomination "Cavalier" would have been a five-dollar gold piece that would have been an exact excange for the English sovereign.

War expenses and lack of bullion precluded these plans, however.

I think this is a cool little replica thingy. image

It is interesting with the St. Andrew's cross. It had not yet been used in the Confederacy in 1861. When was the write up on the coin written?

    Was the Confederacy right?
