Does anyone care that ANACS has recognized these Minnesota "extra tree" doublings?

I posted a link to a now closed auction, in the "official thread", that contained one of their slabs holdering one of these quarters, closed at $362, but it was a blue fish that pulled not a single reply so I thought I'd start a new thread just to see if anyone cares to discuss.

Personally, this doubling on the Minnesota quarter is growing on me because it appears to be just that, and not some bizarre "extra leaf" that no one knows for certain how it got there.

Bueler? Bueler?

Didn't PCGS just make an announcement that they are going to start slabbing "extra tree" quarters?

I think that they are kinda interesting, but not enough to buy one. Seems like subtle DD's are showing up all over. Extra knee, trees........

I hope so...well...I hope so and I hope to find some some first! And then sell them. I've got a decent pile of rolls, there's got to be one in there somewhere right? No? Dang it!

I'd like to send this one in to PCGS, but not sure if its worth membership renewal and grading fees. I think it's a DDR#1 based on Ken Potter's web page. It came from a mint set and is a D mint.

Wow. $362?!?! That says there's some real demand out there.

It's sounds like a neat variety. Looks like an opportunity while the main collectors are
still asleep - to grab these while the price rises.
  • Yep, Thats a DDR. and PCGS is grading some of my DDR`s right Now. It looks as if there getting into them big Time!!! when i first sent mine in, they contacted me to say they would grade them as extra tree`s only. they did not want to identify them as DDR`s. about a week later they recontacted me, to tell me they were now going to show them as DDR`s and that would take a little longer! I also talked to ken potter and he told me he was in contact with PCGS, and was trying get all of the designators to use the same DDR Numbers, to please PCGS. so they would get into grading ERRORS. Mr. Potter was successful, so PCGS is now gradding DDR`s & probably will be much more involved with all ERRORS in the future!

Unless one of these is a lot different and scarce these are unlikely to generate
anywhere near the excitement that the Wisconsin varieties do. In all probability
most will have mintages in the hundreds of thousands and, in aggregate will be
much more available then the WI leaf varieties.

These will be turning up in pocket change for years though which could keep in-
terest high for a long time.

I remember the person who first promoted them on eBay had one a week to sell, that he found himself in rolls.

Means it can't be that scarce. Definately not $362 scarce.
    Philately will get you nowhere....
  • Some Varieties are bond to scarcer that others. some collectors will want a collection of all verieties known. most have been in circulation for year or so before these errors have become known. with PCGS grading all these varieties, That will give them a lot of credibility. also i think i read, that this is the first DDR quarter since 1990. these DDR`s are a must have for ERROR collectors. before all varieties are known, i think there will be a lot more error collectors out there!

image This is going to be a big hit for the states quarters.

  • I noticed that all of the ANACS slabbed MN DDR quarters had only a 'DDR - Extra Tree' designation - not the DDR/Die number. Since PCGS is adding the number - and since all the variety professionals have agreed to sync to the same numbering system, I emailed ANACS customer service and asked if they now would add the DDR number to the MN quarter submissions. Here is their reply...

"If the customer wants 'extra tree' on his coin, we can do that for free. If the customer wants a die number to go with his extra tree, then he will have to pay a variety verification fee (provided he knows the die number) or an attribution fee (if he doesn't know the die number)."

Their cheapest rate is the 'modern' tier - $11. So it looks like you pay just $11 if you just want "Extra Tree" added. If you know the ddr number and want it on the label - it will cost $16. If you don't know the number and make them determine what type it is - it will cost $21.

ANACS is adding the Die Number. They have been doing it for about 2-3 weeks now.

That's the exact one I found on the first attempt when I opened a previously sealed Mint set. Guess I'd best open some others.
