VAM Attribution Help Request: 1884-CC (VAM 3A - R-5) Doubled 188 Left & Die Break Left Wreath To

StuartStuart Posts: 9,762 ✭✭✭✭✭
I received this 1884-CC PCGS MS-64 (Cameo Semi-PL) Morgan Dollar this past week and believe that it is correctly attributed it as a VAM-3A (R-5) Doubled 188 (Left) & Die Break Left Wreath Top.

The clashed die reverse appears exactly per the reference photo below, and the 188 portion of the date also has the correct filled loop diagnostics in the first 8 and the date numerals are shifted to the left. The coin has a light Cameo contrast between Semi-Prooflike fields and frosty devices.

Out of curiosity what type of market premium would this (R-5) variety have in PCGS MS-64 with semi-PL surfaces?? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi Stuart! Again, nice coin. Well struck. I do not believe there is a premium for the VAM. It is not one with a high interest factor even though it is an R-5. There are some VAM's out there with R-6,7 but barely any premium. Sorry, just my opinion.

Brian: Thanks for your reply. I'd also like to hear opinions from some of our other resident Forum VAM watchers...

Little if any premium. The underlying coin is already worth over $200 and that variety isn't on enough radars yet. A book on CC VAMs would change that, since it a pretty neat one.
