Now that Heritage's Platinum Night catalog coins are mundane, should they move to a Double Platinum

I got my Heritage auction catalogs last night. I was expecting the traditional, large catalog for the Denver auction, and I was not disappointed. I was also looking forward to a very slim additional catalog containing the Platinum Night offerings, which are the rarest of the rare coins in existance in the world. However, I was shocked to see that the Platinum Night catalog was actually larger than the regular Heritage catalog (although, admittedly, it has less lots).

Now that the Platinum Night concept is getting watered down, do you think that Heritage should trot out another level of catalog, which will contain only the rarest of the rarest of the rare? This catalog could be the super exclusive Double Platinum Night catalog, or maybe the Titanium Night catalog, or maybe the SuperPQHighEndForTheGradeAndOffTheMarketForGenerations catalog. Do you think Heritage should move to this sort of concept?

It's an excellent point. Now, everyone with but the most widgety of widgets probably expects their beloved coins to make the cut for Platinum night. It's like Honor Roll for high school; they have kept the same grade point standards but inflated the grades so that everyone makes the cut. If my coins are not Platinum-night worthy, I certainly do not want them in the "loser" catalog. image

How about "Double Secret Probation Night?"

    I observed this as well.

I'd suggest that the regular stuff should go into the normal Heritage auctions, the deluxe coins should go in 'Platinum Night' catalogs, and the really good coins should go into ANR auctions.

That sounds like a good plan. It would be better to be a Sneetch in a world where there are no stars upon the bellies.

Can you imagine the jockeying that goes on with Heritage consignors as everyone insists their coins should go into the 'Platinum Night' sale?

Is it my misperception or do all of the Platinum Night catalogs seem to have many of the same coins. I cannot remember a Platinum catalog not having a 1796 quarter eagle or an 1848 "CAL" quarter eagle. This time, however, they were upstaged by ANR on the "CAL" quarter eagle. ANR has an MS-68 (!!!!)--or it least it says so on the slab--and Heritage could only scarf up a ex-jewelry no-grade damaged example. Unless there is a requirement for the Platinum Night catalog to have a "CAL" quarter eagle, which must be the case, does that coin really belong there? I don't think so. image

Eleven High Relief Saints, a PanPac $50 (only one???), the obligatory Stellas (2, including one coiled hair), 70-CC and 56-O $20's (per the playbook), etc. I guess I am getting jaded. The signature coin is really cool, though: the almost unique 1861-P Paquet $20. image

Edit: I almost forgot. The PN catalog also included six examples of the ultimate overpriced gold "widget" (with my apologies to those who dislike the term): 1911-D quarter eagles. Heck, Scotsman also had six in their recent auction, and I don't think we could confuse Scotsman Auctions with Platinum Night!

If Gillette can do it, Heritage sure as heck can. And they have a LONG way to go:

" Twin blades seemed plausible. Three were a bit unlikely. Four, ridiculous. And five seems beyond the pale. Few people, though, seem willing to bet that Gillette’s five-bladed Fusion is the end of the road for razor-blade escalation." image

Hey, if you collect $20 Libs and are a REAL MAN, you have to step up and buy it.

(The 20 CEOs who collect $20 Libs by date have just dropped their pens, refreshed their current stock quote, and have simulataneously put in enough stock to sell so that they can beat out the other nineteen.)

I can just imagine a behind closed doors meeting at Heritage four months ago...

The head of consignments is screaming at his staff, trying to energize them:

"How can we have Platinum Night without a 48 CAL quarter eagle? If you guys don't dig one up in the next four weeks, you are all FIRED! Do you hear me? FIRED! Now go out and find one."

... and after receiving the ex-jewelry piece, "good work, guys, now let's put some lipstick on this pig".

  • I think "Plutonium Night" has a good ring to it.

Or, you could use "Double White Hot Nuclear Night"

  • I think they should go the American Express route and just have the "Black" catalog.

As a caucasian, I am offended image

Maybe Heritage can just offer a little less juice to appease their consigners who don't get into the PN catalogue, so they can get it back to what it used to be. Or maybe they can offer "employee pricing plus" to get more coins into their regular catalogues. image
