I am pleased to share this pretty 1884-CC PCGS MS-64 (Cameo Semi-PL) Morgan Dollar purchased at auction tonight with you.
I think that she's quite a nice looking lady image -- How do you like her based on these original seller's auction photos??

I agree, it is a really clean cheek for a 64. Nice pick-up Stuart! image

That coin looks very clean on the cheek as well as elsewhere and from the admittedly small photos it does look like an upgrade candidate to me.

Nice. image The devices look great as do the fields. I think it will upgrade to a 65.

I almost always agree with you that these PQ64's --that often are 65's, are just a lot of coin for the money---
BUT on this date CC and this one only, I believe there's some MS66PL's around in the $1400-to $1600 range that really are MS68 (not MS67) quality--Example: The Bill Fivez PCGS 84CC in MS66PL sold at 2003 ANA for I think $1600-----it was flawless---ZERO MARKS!, lusterous, pl, and now is in a much higher grade holder. Wish I has the money as underbidder--it went to a darn crackout dealer! Arrghhh #$%%@!

Bill: Thanks for your informative post earlier on this thread about 1884-CC Morgan Dollars.

I agree with you that 1884-CC Morgans are plentiful in very conservatively graded holders, and as a result are a fertile ground for those in search of high eye-appealing MS-64 & 65+ specimens, including those in PL/DMPL designations.

Since I was able to pick up this Semi-PL Cameo contrast coin for about Greysheet Ask, it was simply too good a deal on a pretty Morgan for me to refuse. image

    nice
  • NP, Stuart. I just bought an 1884-CC MS63 in an older PCGS. It's nice, but just slightly more "baggy" than yours. Yours may make MS65. 1883 and 1884-CC's seem not to be affected as much pricewise by the GSA "crackouts", but 1890-CC and 1891-CC...wow. I bought an MS60 1891-CC that looks darn like a former GSA. In its NGC it was $330, but in a GSA holder, about $2250. Amazing...

  • Unless the pictures are being too generous on that coin, it sure looks higher than a 64. I can't see the field in front of Miss Liberty's face but that coin has the cheek of a shot 66 coin. Super nice!

I received this 1884-CC PCGS MS-64 (Cameo Semi-PL) Morgan Dollar over the weekend, and with the help of fellow forum member DizzleCC, believe that we have correctly attributed it as a VAM-3A (R-5) Doubled 188 (Left) & Die Break Left Wreath Top.

The clashed die reverse appears exactly per the reference photo below, and the 188 portion of the date also has the correct filled loop diagnostics in the first 8 and the date numerals are shifted to the left.

Out of curiosity what type of market premium would this (R-5) variety have in PCGS MS-64 with semi-PL surfaces?? Thanks in advance for your replies.

My WAG is not much. It's not a Top 100 or Hot 50 and only an R-5. It might bring a few dollars extra if someone falls for it, but the money on this coin is for the grade and the MM.
