Hypothetical: PCGS STOPS grading toned coins.

Coins that even slightly resemble rainbow color are denied by PCGS for grading. In a big turnaround they declare all wild toning to be environmental damage and stop grading the coins with vivid colors altogether.

    I'm sure alot of folks would be unhappy but I don't think this scenario is all that farfetched. With all the difficulty in determining what is AT and what is NT, perhaps PCGS would decide to "call the whole thing off" and just let ANACS net-grade them. There are an aweful lot of pretty good "coin-doctors" out there and as long as there is a premium placed on rainbow toners, they won't go away.

    face facts, it'll never happen. It's all about money. If anything, they'd start charging more to "super certify" it and give the degree of toning. Like MS65 T332 (33.2% toned).

    It's probably better to bodybag a few times, and then slab. They can clean up on resubmission money enough to offset any potential liability...

    What will happen?

    A TON of terrific, ORIGINAL, and beautiful coins will get a bath just so they can be graded. A true shame!

    Extant toned coins in PCGS slabs would go for significant premiums. NGC, ANACS and ICG would pick up the slack and one of them might even do some innovative marketing to designate various types of toning.

    I think what is more likely, is for the debate to shift from AT to NT to MAT, and NMAT, as in Market Acceptable Toning, and Not Market Acceptable Toning. If you really can't tell if a coin got to look a certain way because of it's slowly acquired original skin or because someone got it to look that way on purpose, at that point what does it matter?
