Sweet mint error

While sorting through some junk coin at work this past week I found a nickel mint error that I haven't seen before. I don't usually pay too much attention to nickels but this one caught my eye. The regular strike is pretty strong over all, with a couple dingers on the rim and a few surface scratches - pretty good shape for a '79. Now on the obverse at around 8 o'clock you can see "RIBUS UNU", and on the reverse at about 10 you can read "FS". Not a huge restrike, but very sharp. I just think it's cool that this thing got struck, flipped and struck again. How common is that?
Thanks for all the help folks.

coinman - unfortunately, I have no means of posting a pic (no scanner OR digital camera)
  • Is the "RIBUS UNU" and "FS" oriented the proper way or is it backwards? Also is it incuse or raised?

Thenewguy - I'm not trying to sound offended, but I do know the difference between a legit strike and a "double strike" where someone stacks 2 coins on top of each other and whacks the top one with a hammer. This is a legit 2nd strike. The letters are raised - not incuse (I know what incuse means as I have a 1914 Indian Head type Quarter Gold piece - and readable from left to right not backwards. I wish I could post a pick to make it easier for eveyone to believe that this is a legit coin, but.......
BTW.......if I want to ask about what camera to buy so I can take pics to post, can i do it here? Or should I post it somewhere else?

Do a quick search, you will find about a hundred threads on the subject...just type in camera.....imageimage

  • Was no intent to offend but you might be surprised at how many people dont know the difference so is usually the first question that is asked when no pic is provided. I does sound like a flip over in collar double strike.

Asking about cameras for coin pic's is fine here but a search will get lots of threads on the subject. Heres a link to another thread that was about cameras.Camera
I use a Nikon coolpix 4800 and am happy with it but wish it would macro focus a bit farther from the coin. With the short distance it does in makes lighting a bit tricky.

Thanks for the help folks - especially with the info on links to cameras. Hopefully a pic will help determine whether this is a common mint error or not.

Is this an Incollar double strike? $75-$100 I think.
