What SF Bay Area coin shops, if any, routinely carry "High End" coins........

......... by which I mean a sizable inventory of expensive (say $5,000.00 per coin or above) Classic US coinage (18th and 19th century coins and early 20th century MS/key date gold and silver).

I get tired of looking at widget and modern crap all of the time and would like to look at smoe coins with major drool factor. Thanks in advance. SanctionII.

Jack Beymer's shop in Santa Rosa will have a relatively good inventory of all the types you mentioned. Don't expect any deals though. The shop charges retail prices at minimum, often times you'll pay more than retail and they don't do much haggling. Don't go in there expecting to shoot the $hit and have a dandy time either as they're not exactly known for being overly welcoming.

All that being said, they guy has some nice coins. If you're willing to pay big bucks for your coins (which sometimes you just have to) and you're not looking for a buddy then you might have some luck there.

In the 1999-2000 time frame I had to travel to Santa Rosa for multiple court hearings in a difficult case I was handling. I took the opportunity to stop by JacK Beymer's shop. He did have a nice selection of coins at the time. They were not conversational, but they did let me look through a large number of proof and SMS sets that they had in inventory. I was able to find a couple of sets that had very nice Cameo coins, including one of the two best 1967 SMS CAM halves I have ever acquired (still have it). I picked up the set for $20.00, even though the guy behind the counter looked long and hard at the set and commented on how nice of a half it was. Even after looking at the half, he decided to let me have it without charging a premium.

Most dealers have some items that are high end, but for security purposes they do not keep them in public display. It always pays to ask to see some "better" items and you may be surprised. Since you are in the Bay Area please feel free to give me a call if there is something in particular you are looking for.

  • Hi Sanction II,

The Bay Area is really a place for Ancient Coin Collectors. A big collector base and a few dealers. Otherwise it is challenging. Beymer is OK but his material is pretty average and would not be worth the drive in my opinion. And, as others have said, not the freindliest or helpful individual. Don Kagin in Marin County probably has the most high quality and high end material around but does not have a retail space so you need to make an appointment.

There are a few shops in San Francisco, the East Bay and the Penninsula, but nothing high end.

Your best bet is to just wait for the Santa Clara show twice a year.

    Happy Hunting.

    Best,
