What Would You Choose A $20 St Gaudens Or $20 Liberty Head Gold Coin

Hi a company I deal with owes me a little bid of money on a deal we made back in Dec/05 do you think 2 St Gaudens $20 Bu 1909 gold coins are better than 2 Liberty Head $20 Bu 1904 coins, Don't quote me on the dates but both gold coins are in the common level. So what would you chose and why? ty For the help of a newbie putting coins away in the coffee can.

The Saints should go marching in.

Just don't put them in a coffee can.

Liberty head, no contest. The design blows away St. Gaudens. The reverse of the libery head $20 coin is one of the finest designs ever on a US coin.
  • How about one of each?
  • I would personally take the saints. I think the design is much nicer. avg. circ. libs tend to be very, very baggy which is a turn off for me. for some reason saints dont seem to show as many nicks.

Either go for one in the best grade you can afford (I'd pick the Saint)

    or

Go for both in lesser grades if your budget can do it.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Liberty is the one I'd pick. Then I'd get the Saint later.
  • I would recommend Libs since for most dates they are scarcer than Saint Gaudens while their prices are not much different. I like the design of the Saint Gaudens better, though.

    Go for the Lib's

Get one of each and you'll have a double eagle type set and at least some variety.

  • Hi, BrokenArrow.

If you can only get either the St. Gaudens or the Liberty, and they're both in the same relative condition, I'd choose the St. Gaudens. The St. Gaudens is, in my opinion, the most beautiful American coin ever made.

Since nobody's caught on yet, here's what you do...

Since you say the coins are "common BU", you take the two "BU" Saints, sell one and buy the cheaper $20 Liberty "BU" and put $100-$200 in your pocket.

Or sell them both and buy two $20 Libs and put $400 in your pocket.

BU is a relative term, but if you had two coins that both would grade out as 64s, the Liberty would be more valuable. I would get one of each and think of it as the beginning of a gold type set.

damn straight. the reverse is truly the best eagle ever portrayed. and to be honest, i like the obverse better also.

I prefer the Saint's design (obeverse) over the Liberty, but I agree with the idea of selling one of whatever you get and purchasing one of the other. Then you'll have one of each. Time to get a type set gold page perhaps? It would be a good start!

From the sounds of the question, not even close. Nobody sells either coin in 64 for as "BU." By BU, I'm inferring 60-62.

As far as aesthetics, the Gaudens wins hands down. Something about Lady Liberty struttin' her stuff that's irresistable. Makes for a dramatic coin. The walker half is stunning as well for the same reason.

I would take one of each if at all possible.....

My preference is really for the Liberty, I have one of each for a type set and to me the liberty looks better.....

I am also surprised at all the love given to the liberty coins over the saints..... Thought I was weird thinking this

  • While the St. Gauden's design is high art, ever since the modern mint products have re-used it it has become less special, IMO.

    So I'd go Libs.

The one of each idea has merit too.
  • About a 50/50 split, yea I am told the grades will be at least 60/62, I might take Dicky's advice and one other poster on getting one each, but I have 2 kids and they might want the same one, so keep sending in why you like one the other, thanks g

I'd choose the Lib *if* they weren't heavily bagmarked. They're harder to find less baggy than Saints.

BrokenArrow: Try to get a $20 Liberty in MS-61 or MS-62 dated prior to 1877. They are so much nicer (in my opinion) on the obverse. These are known as the type II versus the 1877-1907 type III's.

The 1873 is not that expensive in MS-60/61/62 but has much better value than the very common 1904's.

I was just thinking the same thing. Now this is a great starting point to continuing a nice gold type set.

This is a fabulous Saint and type II Liberty, both in MS-67.

Beautiful Coins my coin friend, The reason I am getting two gold old $20 coins in bu is that I am owed money for a swap that the dealer sold and thought investing in the $20 gold pieces would secure my monies longer? I am getting the 2 gold $20 coins for $700 each.

i would pick two coins out of the lot offered that have the best eye appeal and the least amount of rub

Tough decision and you said not to quote you on the dates so I won't... because the 1909 is not as common as one might think in MS.
