Some time ago I posted this find. I had it verbally appraised by a prominent appraiser. She said it was from the holy roman empire and worth 4 or 5 G's. Unfortunately she's more of an art appraiser than a jewelry appraiser.
I've since taken it to a local jeweler. He said it's old, and at least 21 kt. He also recommended that I take it to his expert. "His expert" said at least 21 kt. and dating from the 1850's to 1910. He said it was resized at least 50 years ago (I can't tell) and it's worth about $500. What I thought was a dove he says is a damascus sword. There are two little crud filled squares on the back (not shown). He said these are hiding a makers mark.
In January said expert will have a salesman demonstrating a new piece of equipment. He wants to use my ring to test it out. He says this equipment will expose the makers mark, and if the maker was famous, or we can trace the ring to a prominent owner it will add to the rings value. He said he will give me a certified appraisal for $50, a service he usually charges hundreds for.
Since the first appraiser generally does art, I think I'm going to have to go with him.
