Take a look at these professionally cleaned coins especially on page 3 of the link.

WOW,some of those look really great !!!!

OK, NOW LOOK AT PAGE 3 ON THE LINK AND LOOK AT THE 10 AND 20.00 GOLD AT THE BOTTOM...THE FACES ON THE COINS SEEM TO BE "SMILING" IN THE "AFTER" PICTURE...I MEAN THIER MOUTHS ARE EVEN TURNED UPWARD IN A SMILING POSITION.

MAYBE THEY ARE JUST HAPPY THEY WERE CONSERVED !

TOO FUNNY..IS IT JUST ME? CAN ANYONE ELSE SEE IT ? I SWEAR I HAVENT HAD A DRINK TONIGHT..........

  • Wow! That 1863 $10 gold piece sure seems happy to be conserved! I might be persuaded to send in some of my sadder coins to get them cheered up, too! lol

I think they arranged their lighting so it would look like that!image

  • Several of them look worse in my opinion, including the Half Dime. Very interesting how they got that thumb print off the Walker though...

Other than the WL half and maybe the gold dollar, I think I'd probably like the "before" coins better than the "after" ones in person. The $10 Lib does look happy. I wonder if they've ever conserved a Cook Islands schwanz dollar.

i doubt seriously that anything was done to manipulate the lighting. at the 2004 F.U.N. Show luncheon that NGC hosted, they had their photo set-up in tow and were offering free pictures which were later e-mailed and it was a simple process of placing the coin and focusing before the picture was taken. i assume this is the same and the phenomenon you guys are noticing is due to the "cleanness" of the surface at the corner of Liberty's mouth and the light reflection. also, if you look at the entire Photo Gallery and base an opinion of Conservation and what NCS offers/can do, i doubt many---if any---would think the service is anything but useful .

it's not a cure-all but it can certaianly help many, many problem coins.

It's comforting to know that there exists a professional APPROVED procedure for getting unsightly original skin off of coins.

On page 3, except for the Walker, I like all the "before" coins better.

There were some botched early morgans in the later pages. Looks like they had some really nice rainbow toning and then the after pics made them look pretty generic. image

I was thinking the same about that walker.
It may be wise to rethink passing on a coin with a print, if it can be removed.

I agree the half dime looks worse after.

The only coin improved in that lot is the half dollar. It makes me wonder why anyone would ruin coins like that.
