    << <i>what causes toning on gold >>

I think copper/impurities mixed with the gold.

I see it on the Madison too BTW and that's what I would expect it to be.

I can understand copper spots and what-not on the .917 type of gold, but I have two coins, a Chinese Unicorn and a Canadian Maple leaf, both .999+ that have spots too. I weighed, checked diameter and thickness and they were right on, and both came from reputable sources, so I don't doubt they are genuine. One opinion I heard was that even the .001 impurity could result in the spot, but I was thinking it could be something in the manufacturing? I'd like to hear opinions. Here is a picture of the maple leaf from the auction listing (I was excited to get it when spot was about $535...everyone could make money on the gold price drops that happen when I buy an ounce image).

If you look to the left of the maple leaf near the top and above the f in fine you can see the spots in the picture. Like I said, reliable source plus the measurements were right on. I'll look for my unicorn too...

Large copper spot which toned, must have happened after slabbing, because it's not a 70 now.
