I think you are close. I would probably guess VF30 or VF35. But I am more familiar with the Indian quarter eagles so the liberty may grade a little better.

Given the limitations of grading based on image, the coin looks 40ish to me. It looks pretty original, too, though the proof is really in the in-hand evaluation.
  • the 72 is a nice little piece that is graded very strictly (vf 35). i dont think it would look out of place in a 40 holder. The coin is nice and original and has great color on it! pretty rare too!

all the richmond coins had real nice color on them (at least the 2.5 libs).

XF, right at 40 would be a good place for it.

  • just wanted to update most everyone. i desided to go for this one. i know i stated in other posts id wait for a rarer coin and or a $3 or a $20 . but this i feel dont come around everyday and would be less than smart to pass on this. i want to thank nicholas on this deal ( i dotn know many dealers willing to work with a client till nearly 2 am to close a deal. that is real customer service. very cool.

all the richmond coins had real nice color on them

Okay, I have to draw the line there. There was a fair amount of low-end material in the gold portion of the Richmond sale, including some coins that had been "worked" and many dipped out shiny ones. To say that "all the Richmond coins had real nice color on them" is a gross generalization, misleading, and, frankly, wrong.

As for the coin in question, when I see a coin that is apparently undergraded, the first thing I ask myself is "what am I missing here?" Or, in other words, has the coin been net graded for a minor problem? A potential buyer should do the same.
  • RYK,
I am just speaking for the coins that I purchased. I didn't really take a look at anything outside of a dosen or so $2.5s. I am sorry if i overgeneralized my previous statement.

That coin looks really nice and I like the color on it. I think you made a good buy.

PS. I am just curious, and I don't want to be a smart alec. Why did it take until 2 AM to close the deal? What time did the negotiations start?

  • I have really no sleep habit ,we started on the deal late , and since sometimes i can ramble it lasted long. but there were no "problems " a nice clean smooth deal with both sides winning.
