Baltimore Show Report from Coin Rarities, LLC is Up

This dealer does not get much airtime on these boards, so I am posting a link to his Baltimore show report. He has some interesting observations about the market and the show. It is always nice to get different perspectives from dealers. What do you think of this report?

  • Coin Rarities is a great company. The proprietor is Dave Wnuck who is one of the nicest and most honest guys in the hobby. BTW, I liked his report. Sounded right on the money. Wish I had known about the Smithsonian trip though! Even though I would not have had time to go. It was a busy show as usual. Wake up at 7:00, work all day, then go to auctions.

The most insightful aspect of his report is describing the effort it takes to be a good coin dealer. Here's a guy that spends all week at a show, scours the auctions, and does homework on what to buy, at what price, and why. Sounds like he works hard and is doing some of the right things. The coin business isn't any different than others, it takes hard work to be successful.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Can I echo the praise of my friend Dave? Those of you who have never checked out his inventory should -- he has the guts to buy things because they're neat, knowing that others will find them neat too. His fortes are colonials, early US, and patterns, but I'm always surprised by something in his case that doesn't fall into any one of those categories. He also has a great eye for quality and has helped build some pretty nifty collections.

    Thanks for posting the report.
  • Hi All:

Holy Cow-- Heaps of praise! I should check these message boards more often. Thanks to all for those kind words.

I have always been a collector at heart, so when I stumble into something that I think is cool, or unusual, or just plain neat, I will almost always buy it for inventory. Sometimes that is a mistake (and, oh man, I've made some doozies over the years!), but more often than not if I think it is cool, some other folks probably will too.

    Rgds,
    Dave W.
