New Purchase: Morgan 1878-S DMPL.......what are you thoughts?

Trying to get a 1878-S DMPL is no easy task. I was at the show in Boston today and could not walk away from this coin. The mirrors are incredible. My camera picks up everything though, so the coin looks better in hand. What are your thoughts?

    Brian:

Nice coin! Is it a 64?
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Now here is something we should all be able to agree on! This is one very nice Morgan dollar and not easy to come by. I like it!

It will be going to PCGS in the next week. I bought it as a raw coin. I'm hoping for a 64 DMPL.

  • Looks very nice for a 78-S, i have seen 100s of 1 sided dmpls but only on a rare occasion do you see one with the reverse as frosty and mirrored as the obverse. Good luck at PCGS.

I would not be surprised to see that come back as a 65DMPL, great looking Morgan.

  • I'd say 50% chance at DMPL, because as you say it is tough to find in that date. My guess is that 64 PL is most likely on the first try. The mirrors highlight the chatter in the obverse field, so 65 will be tough. Good luck at PCGS. It may take a couple of tries to get the DMPL though.

I think 64 DMPL is not out of the quesiton, but I would bet PCGS would grade it 64 PL...Mike

MS65PL IMHO as the lettering on the reverse is weak. Fully GEM though and better than a 64, just not quite DMPL.

  • Nice coin-- If it has full 8" clear mirrors it should go DMPL, but that is rather unusual. The chatter looks like it will 64pl, but if it's a full DMPL it may be given a bit of slack and go 65--

Brian: That 1878-S is a great pickup, and one of my very favorite Morgan Dollar dates.

Based on the digital pictures, I'd say that it appears to be a 64 grade because of the contact marks in Miss Liberty's jaw & nose area of the face, and also in the fields in front of her face, although I've seen worse in MS-65 holders. Shes a Shot-65.

As for designation, she appears to be a lock PL and perhaps a shot at DMPL, although the die polish striations on the reverse (ref your lower right photo) will be the key determining (and perhaps limiting) factor, along with the depth of mirrors.

It's a great submission coin, and if you hit a home run and make an MS-65 DMPL, you've made a $4000+ coin! imageimage

  • Nice coin ... I say that if you had submitted it last year, it would have gone 65 DMPL. However, today at PCGS ... 64 PL. Let us know how it turns out.
