Fancy descriptions: Were you ever so impressed by a dealer's description of a coin that it stuck in

I have to admit that I've learned some new words by reading dealers' descriptions of coins. For instance, there are some colors that I never knew existed...

Some descriptions are like poetry, and the person who did the writing is obviously very talented.

Can you give examples of some unique, creative ways that you've seen coins described?

  • One dealer described a coin as "meaty". I think he was ready for some time off.
  • Dan----Guys have a way of making the coin sound better than it really is---adjectives they have picked up over the years. I once bought a 500 dollar coin off of Ebay from a dealer. Coin sounded great and "original". Pictures were not bad at all. Found the coin to be wanting----so in about a year I sold it again on Ebay. I used the exact same wording as the guy had used when I bought it. Coin was bought by another dealer. I made a little over 50 bucks when all was said and done. I figured if the wording worked for the first guy, it would work for me. It did. Bob [supertooth]

Yes, I still laugh at the piece of garbage in a MS65 slab described as having "satin black toning."

I like good pictures and a description that supplements that picture.

One prominent dealer often described his coins having "creamy" luster. Every time we see that description many of us have a good laugh.

I do know in buying Morgan dollars that "Nice, original toning". is a polite way of saying, "Not nice, very ugly toning".

If the person giving the description is Jon Rosenthal , it not only sticks in my mind, but is in my dreams. image

  • I saw one listed by WTCG on the BST board that I thought was clever, but I guess it didn't stick in my mind that well afterall because I can't remember it now image

  • That's funny. I too see "creamy" luster quite a bit.
