Conder, Cammie, anyone? Age of this NGC slab?

Approximate? I've looked it over a million times and I don't see a single tick anywhere on the front or back. Super strike, too. I don't know where they got the MS63 from. image

    I'd say a 3rd or 4th generation.

Can you translate that to years?

If I am right, I'm thinking around the 1990 timeframe. But someone with Conder's book will probably chime in and correct me. image

Thanks, NWCS. Found Conder's thread on the generations. Looks like a "5" from his list, puts it at 1992-1997, if I'm correct:

I could be wrong, but I believe your slab is earlier than that one.

Cool! Not meant as a BST post, but what the heck: it's on its way to the 'bay today!

  • I believe it is from around the 1993-1995 era but conder knows more about production slabs than me. I specialize in samples.

1992-1997 time frame for this holder. The six digit ID starting with a one might indicate early in this time frame.

That indicates nothing. The number are not in order.

  • Nice dime.

NGC was real tough on darker toned uncs. before everyone jumped on the wagon.
I've got an '04 NGC has graded 64 that is a lock 65* today. I'd bet yours will upgrade also.

  • Yes it is an NGC 5. Slabs before NGC 5 did not have barcodes, and starting with NGC 6 they have the groove and ridge in the front shell that seperates the coin area from the label area. 1992 - 1997 is about the right time period. You can't tell when in the period they were produced because, as was mentioned, the serial numbers are not issued in any particular order. In fact if I remember correctly, and some you people who submit coins can correct me on this if I'm wrong, the serial number on the NGC slab is the Invoice number and then the three digit number in the first, second, third etc coin listed on the invoice. If you have more than a thousand coins on one invoice then the next available unused invoice number is used and it starts over again at -001. This last part is per David Lange. The computer keeps track of all the invoice numbers that have been used so that no invoice number gets used twice. (Some people use photocopies or multiple copies printed off the internet so the computer tracking is needed.)

My records show the invoice number being the numbers on the left, followed by the line item number on the right. My invoices from late 1997 were numbered with six digits, 697XXX.

If they used a "current at the time" invoice, this coin was encapsulated much closer to 1992 than 1997 because the invoice number was only 159272. Someone could have used an old invoice for the coin in this thread so nothing is certain about the time frame.

NGC holder numbers are not sequential nor consecutive. Collectors Society invoices and Authorized Dealers invoices use different numbering sequences. There are also some number blocks exclusively dedicated to each of the larger submitters.

Sure would be nice to know the numbers dedicated to the larger submitters.image

That's up to you to figure that out...telling you outright would be too easy for you.
