hello from another new guy

hey guys. after about a year of reading these boards everyday i figured it was time to join in. my story is pretty similar to a lot of people here, i collected religeously through 1991 or so and then grew very tired of the hobby. Fast forward 13 years or so and i caught the bug again. i then spent the better part of a year buying anything i saw. i have slowed down recently and am trying to get a little bit of focus to my collection. so i have tried to whittle it down to 1970-71 basketball in nice raw shape, 70's & 80's basketball stars, I recently got caught up in 2005 fan favorites (i need about 8 commons for the base set if anyone could help me out), and my pride and joy, my Al Newman collection. don't ask me why but i've made it my goal to find one of every Newman card ever produced. i'm getting really close but i feel these last 10 or so might be nearly impossible to find. turns out a career .225 hitter with one career home run cards don't come up for sale all that often. well, just wanted to say hello. i feel like i know a lot of you already from reading your posts for so long and i look forward to chatting with you all in the future.

Hey pa...I have never asked, but is that sign on 294 just north of the WI/IL border? I am pretty sure I have passed by that sign several times.

    Welcome, Luke!

Anyone who displays a Twins team logo is topps in my book. You have to be the one and only Al Newman collector. If you were to get your cards graded and get a PSA Set Registry going, you'd be #1 for now and forever -- although I have seen some interesting MN athletes in the Registry (where's deyo21 and his Alan Page SR ?!). I'll have to see if I have any unusual Newman items I could scan and share with you.

It sounds like you're mostly a basketball card collector. Which team(s) did you follow in the early '70s while in NBA-less MN?? Best of luck!

Yeah- Its on 294 the tri-state tollway between Chicago and Milwaukee. I always thought it was funny when I would pass it.

Here is a pic I have seen in e-mails and on the net that I enjoy...

  • hey guys, thanks for all the replies. i kind of figured my Newman collection would be the subject of some jokes. my friends all think i'm nuts as well.

HoofHearted-I grew up in the 80's in central MN, I guess that's where my fond memories of the Twins comes from. Where in MN are you from?

Southern-I need#'s 28,29,33,81,95,103,104,and 121. turns out 6 booster boxes from target weren't quite enough to get the job done. let me know if there is anything we could work out.

    luke,

I grew up in Martin Co., 10 miles north of Iowa -- where I90 goes through the state...

I went to college for a couple years at St. Cloud St. U. Do you live close to there?

  • i grew up in Bertha, real small town, in the Brainerd area. I'm in Fargo, ND now, but went to school in St. Paul for a while and ended up here. i have a lot of friends in the St. Cloud area and used to go down there quite a bit.

    luke,

Click on the "profile" button under the navigation at the top of this page. Then scroll down and turn the "Allow Private Messages" (or whatever it says) to "ON".

The "profiles" area is where you can set up your signature file and everything else...

    Luke and Jason,

I'd be glad to help out on the holes in the "Newman Needs". Do you have a copy of the 1987 Twins team-issue card of Al? (Sorry I don't have doubles of it. Jason, do you have Kirby's version for your PSA SR?! I need to get mine graded.)

    lmk if I can help...

  • HoofHearted-
i do actually have that one, as a matter of fact that is the card that made me start this quest. i had a pretty beat up one from my childhood that i remember buying at the metrodone in 1987. i came across it while at my parents house about 6 months ago and decided to give the Newman set a try. it was worn and ugly and has since been upgraded but the original will probably stay in my collection forever. i don't suppose you have any 1987 twins postcards laying around.

    Luke,

I know I've got 2 or 3 Twins team postcard sets unopened someplace. If I wasn't busy getting to take off on a vacation in the morning, I'd hunt them down.

Maybe when I get back and if I remember this...

    Cheers!! image
