The Forgotten Currency of South Africa

G'day

In this wonderful world of the Internet research tools allow us to go where only special libraries could go before.

As my area of interest has always been early S African coins I have now been able to join them.

This is the wonder of the Internet to me, the ability to be able to go where no man has gone before.... as their interests were not in numismatics!

The Internet continues to surprise me and delivered big time this week when I was able to get the 3D route taken by the Griquas down an obscure mountain pass....

This pivotal event led to South Africa's first freely circulating currency - the trade tokens of Strachan and Co.. which date back to 1874.

Cheers

    More interesting material! image

Though I've seen your site before, it remains one of the best in terms of research and production.. always well worth coming back to! I especially like your section on German East Africa. image

And quite a true signature you have -- "Research creates interest, interest creates value."

I spent some time in South Africa in 1972.

Too bad I didn't have a metal detector then.

I bet that would be an interesting activity to try there. But I was pretty young at the time.
