Grade rarity IH in Hertitage's LB Sale

Wish I could see this one in person. When a brown copper looks nice in a Heritage pic it makes you doubletake. I bet it's laced with beautiful cobalt blue toning that barely shows up on the photo. Extremely well struck and no contact marks -- look at the pristine detail of the feathers, cheek and ONE CENT!

A recent post about the difficulty of getting brown coppers graded MS66-67 makes this one interesting. Pop 1/0 at NGC (in a new slab) and 0/0 at PCGS. Two questions: Do you think PCGS would never grade this 67 due to the color (or strong obverse clash marks)? If so, are they justified in doing so?

Very cool indian. Those were well-struck that year, so it is natural to look that good for a strike. I'd love to see what you could do to photograph it. I'm sure it is a blazer.

Yes, I do believe that PCGS would slab a coin as MS-67BN, but it better be clean, even color, and mark free.

    Paul,

In the early stages of PCGS grading a 1893 got awarded an MS67BN at PCGS. Since that time no other MS67BN or RB coins have been certified. My 1877 toned Indian has been tried a few times for 67 but its a no go.

IMO, MS67 grades at PCGS in the Indian Head series are heavily favored to be a RD coin. The 64L is a super nice coin though but a 99 to 1
shot of crossing to a PCGS MS67BN.

    Paul,

This coin looks very familiar to that really nice PCGS- 66Bn 64L that was for sale on e-bay about 12-18 months ago by a board member. Could this have been the same coin since upgraded to an NGC 67 holder?

    Hi Paul,

Sorry to temporarily hijack youir thread, but wanted you to be aware of this charity donation you've made. I tried to reach you via a different thread on the forum a while back, but had no luck. Link to charity donation

Back to the thread at hand - I think odds are very much against PCGS awarding an MS67BN grade to that coin, based upon the population numbers alone. If anyone wants a first-hand report, I'd be happy to view it while in Long Beach the week of the sale.

Stewart: No, there aren't enough true 66-67BN IH's available to collect. That's what makes them so interesting. As one who stockpliled the finest RD Lincolns when they were cheap surely you can appreciate the rarity of these coins. I'd love to see a collection of the finest RB-BN gems, an eye appealing collection would be almost as tough to find as your magnificent RDs.

CoinGuy1: I'm happy to hear those Ott Lites were donated to a worthy cause image You provide the few dealer threads I continue to read and learn a lot from. As I've said here before, you were the first dealer I encountered that I truly trusted back in your Pinnacle days. My feelings about the hobby has changed some but you remain one of the good guys.
