What is a good "key" half dollar. . .

any grade and type, that is still attainable for under $1000? I'm trying to come up with a type for my "box of 20" that is desired among collectors, but I don't know enough about them to make a decision. Here is a list of my "dream" coins, in no particular order, that might help you make a decision. . .

1. 1851-o 3 cent silver
2. Early Large Cent
3. 1856-58 Flying Eagle Cent (AU58+)
4. $1 Gold
5. 1877 Indian Cent
6. DMPL Carson City Morgan (MS63+)
7. Morgan Dollar (MS67+)
8. Proof Morgan Dollar
9. 1909-s Indian Cent
10. 1909-s VDB Lincoln Cent
11. Pre 1907 $20 Gold (MS63+)
12. Post 1907 $20 Gold (MS63+)
13. Post 1907 $10 Gold (MS63+)
14. Post 1907 $5 Gold (MS63+)
15. Post 1907 $2.5 Gold (MS63+)
16. 1916-d Mercury Dime
17. 1921 Peace Dollar
18. 1932-d Washington Quarter
19. 1937-d 3-legged Buffalo
20. 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln

My list is continually evolving and I may dump the 3 cent silver and the gold. Thanks!

The 1914 Barber half in XF or AU might be a good choice. Lowest mintage Barber Half. Lowest of the twentieth century regular issue half dollars also I believe.

Another difficult date is the 1851 Seated half in grades F-XF. Can be bought in higher grades for lots of money, but below AU they are pretty scarce.

    1815/12 in a solid VF.

    1795 in VG.

1921 D in VF to XF

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I agree with the Walker idea but would suggest something besides a high-grade 1940's date. For the money, I'd like a high-end 1916-D in MS64. This will be an attractive coin with an obverse mintmark and will bring you in well under the $1,000 price tag.

Those are some great ideas on the halves. I really like the 1870-cc. It's got the rarity factor plus the Carson City mint mark . The Walkers are sure a neat design. I don't know if your ideas are helping or just making it that much harder to decide image. In any case I appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

I echo these suggestions... and the Flowing Hair Half, even in VG, has good impact, even on Non-Collectors image

The 1795 half is a very neat design. I have to admit that the "scrawny" eagle on the reverse is one of my favorite eagle designs. Point taken. Thanks Jim and George!

By all means, dump the 3 cent silver. I still need one and I don't need the competition. image

You also seem to be a bit heavy on Morgans. That's ok with me though since I don't collect "classic bullion".

One of the early date Walkers 1921-D if you want a real Key date. You can be out of that price range at Fine if you can even find one. Plus the Walker is just a great design.

If you like Seated Halves, the 1874CC and 1878CC are rare and always in demand. The 1850,51,52 are always in demand and difficult to find problem free. The "No Motto" 1866 half is much more rare than its modest price would suggest and probably one of the real bargains in rare date coins. It's hard to go wrong with rare and key date coins.

You can get a nice MS64 38-D Walker for about $700. Beautiful coin and would make a nice addition to you set of 20.

How about a problem-free 1801 or 1802 half dollar in VG-F? You'll be looking for a while, but it will be worth it.

I've been collecting coins for nearly 18 years now and the coins that I chose for my dream set are ones that I've always said that I would love to own. I've never owned a Carson City Morgan, a 1909-s VDB, etc. I would see one at the coin shop and think that it would be neat to own one some day, but it just didn't fit my current collecting goals. I've finally decided to throw caution to the wind and get some of those coins "that I would love to own". Thanks all for your suggestions. Now that I know the 3 cent silver is in demand it just makes it that much more intriguing for me image. I like all the ideas so far, but that 1795 is sure a cool looking coin. . . image
