Aside from being bodybagged, what's the worst you ever missed on a coin by?

I've seen posts where people got coins back a few points under what they thought, but what's the worst miss you've ever had (if you want to admit it! image )

    I have a 39P Washington that I thought was an AU58. PCGS says it's a 64.
    US Navy CWO3 retired. 12/81-09/04

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.

I wish I would miss it on that side. WOW!

Aside from my first half dozen or so submissions where I blew everything bad, two points.

  • A clean 1903 o Morgan in ANACS MS 65 that PCGS graded MS 62 ( I thought at least 64!). A 1878-P in MS 61 Dpl, NGC that PCGS graded MS-64 PL. Thing is, several years later I now pretty much agree with PCGS.

  • An 1880-S S$1 Anacs 63DMPL that came back MS63. I was hoping for a 64 DMPL but didn't even get a PL designation.

Sounds like you didn't miss, they did. The question is, which time.

I just had a 1939-S nickel come back AU58 that I swore was a lock for 65FS. I guess what I saw as slight strike weakness at the base of the bust the graders saw as rub. *shrug* Other than that, I'm usually within two points.

  • Dont know about worst i ever missed on a coin by, but 1 service to another service i have had 1 coin upgrades 8 points, au58 to ms66, first was icg58 iowa comm, to pcgs ms66.

As for raw coins when i was getting started in coin dealing i bought what i though was a MS65Red maybe RB large cent, anacs opened my eyes when i got back an AU details net VG, burnished/cleaned/tooled label on the slab. Lost my arse on that coin but was a good education and has saved me $ in the long run.

    Gold coin - NOT genuine.

Thankfully the gold in it was worth nearly what I paid for the coin. It was the last gold coin I ever purchased.

    Same here,
Missed a tyII 1$ gold as not genuine. I thought the coin was a lock Au-58. Glad I only bought it for 125.00

However , two years prior I dropped out bidding on a 1855-C $1.00 gold in an estate auction becuase I was scared it was counterfiet, or at least ex-jewlry. Wrong, winning bidder submitted and got coin back in Au-53????
