Congratulation to Aconte for completing awesome SGC 1954 Red Man set!

1954 Red Man Set
I have always enjoyed the vivid colors and illustrations on these oversized cards. This twenty-five card set is one of the only complete sets on the entire SGC set registry. I know how difficult it is to find high grade cards in SGC holders which makes this an even greater accomplishment.
100 percent completion and 86.74 average grade no less!
Way to go Aconte!

Very sharp! I especially like the Reese and Campanella cards.

Me too Koby! Thanx for sharing his set with us.

By the way, Tony is almost complete in every year. He could have been complete awhile ago, but he tries not to settle on filler cards, rather he scrutinizes his cards very carefully so that he gets the strongest cards available for the grade.

I can say that while my set has taken a lot of time to get this way I must especially thank the top Psa red man guy - "RGOLD"
and the top Sgc red man guy - "Mrredman." Both of these guys have shared their collecting knowledge and insight that
has helped along the way. Both have sold me cards along the way. And both have sets that are superior to mine. I just post
more.
look in my uncle's eyes when he talks about Bobby Thomson's homerun....some great stuff...like we're there when he talks
about it...
The cards are tough to find raw in high grade. Sometimes the tabs have too much smudging and that may lead to a pass.
Other times the corners just are too rough for a nm grade or better. But I enjoy the chase even when it is quiet.
Gemint,
My goal overall is to complete the 52 + 53 set in a grade of 7 (84) average or better with no cards less than Sgc 80.
My goal for the 54 + 55 set is to have all cards graded Sgc 84 or better. I'm not sure if I'm going to chase an 8 (88)
average. I think with the 55 set I'll have it once I get the Piersall. I had the chance to pickup an Sgc 88 1954 Willie Mays
but was quite disappointed with the card when I got to view it in person. I did not push hard for the card since I thought
my Sgc 84 was the the same to me. After that I don't know if I do another graded set for a while. I'm working on
team sets - 51 Bowman Eagles + 81 Topps Phillies in graded form. But I'm not very aggressive here. And as Neal (1420)
alluded to I'm now buying toy soldiers from the 30's and 40's. Crazy huh???
Again, thanks all for the compliments. Good luck on all your collecting goals. I hope that you all enjoy not just the chase
of the sets and cards you need but the actual cards themselves for what they represent a moment in time and a fun
part of life! I know we are all just borrowing the cards and sometimes you are forced to sell. I hope that more of us
get to keep and enjoy the cards after the chase is complete. It's a reward for all that hard work.
And remember... Red Mans Rock!

Great Job Tony....you have one heck of a collection going.
Congrats on the set! Very impressive. I really appreciate you sharing your experiences with the Red Mans over here.
I hope to get to meet you in Cleveland.
Regards,
Alan
I've got to say I really like the SGC slab too. At one point I contemplated collecting my sets in them but ultimately decided on PSA mostly because of availability. I just won a lot of '65 Topps a week or so ago which had 1 SCd & 1 SGC card in it . Both slabs look great.
Again congratulations on a great effort and beautiful cards, the cards are indeed what it's all about.

Did I leave anything out?
That is an AWESOME set in any holder!
I don't think I'll make Cleveland this year.
<< <i>Williams cards , is he in 1 of the sets? Any chance you have a duplicate Parnell you'd like to sell or trade? >>
Dave,
Yes Williams is in the 52 set. And no dice on a Parnell card. I actually need his 53 card.
Tony (aconte)
and felt bad because it is in a SGC holder... but it seems that
others collect this in that holder. Maybe I will keep it in it
and not cross it over to PSA....
Just got around to reading this thread. Great job, Tony.
I've been trying to learn how to post pics. Did this work?

Nicely said, Tony
Congrat's on a great set.

I would expect to pay $50 to $100 for most PSA 7 commons. Look to the SMR price for stars, and expect to pay more for those where collectors need PSA 7's because PSA 8's are not available.
High population PSA 8's may sell at a discount to SMR, lower population PSA 8's can sell 1 1/2 to 3 times SMR. I guess this holds true for just about any set, but unlike your mainstream sets, there are limited numbers of raw Red Man cards to be graded in the future. I am unaware of any large numbers of raw collections, unopened packs, warehouse finds, etc.
Now would be a good time to buy your first Red Man cards before new set collectors, player and team set collectors come into the market. For any info on what makes a nice PSA 7 Red Man card, there is no better source than Tony. Hope this helps.
You could pick up a 1955 Red Man Mays cheaper. Same card with a different color background. Currently 12 population in PSA 8.
1952 Red Man Mays, with a population of 5 in Psa 8, $2000-3000. Most 1952 Red Man cards sell for more than the other years, with a PSA 8 population of only 116 for the whole set. 1952 is also the only year that Ted Willliams appears in the set.
Willie Mays does not appear in the 1953 Red Man set.
to an 8. What I look for in a 7 is a card with decent corners that might have touches on three corners that prevent it from
being an 8. A scan on ebay should allow you to judge the corners. Also, if you are looking for a nice seven check out the
tab for no or little smudging, the bio box for very little black specs or no print marks, clean edges, and registration. Sometimes
the cards can be out of focus. Not often, but it does happen.
I've seen quite a few raw red man's on ebay over the last few years. The majority that are described as nm or better are
not. Most raw with tabs is in vg to ex condition. Don't be fooled. These raw cards can sell for quite a premium at times
compared to their graded ex counterparts. The one drawback with buying what may appear to be near mint or better is that
it can be difficult to view a wrinkle or crease with an ebay scan. So if you like affordable nice cards that display very well
you can not go wrong with Psa 5's or 6's. And if you don't mind other grading companies an Sgc 60 or 80 can also do the trick.
Stars + Hofers should go from 100% of Smr to 125% in these grades. But you never know on ebay. You might get be able
to grab them at 75% of SMR. It can go the other way too! Commons go for around SMR or a tad more in ex grade.
On the Mays, the 55 is the easiest from a red man point of view. My favorite set is the 54 because of the handful of variations.
The only drawback on the 54 set for me is no Stan Musial. He is in the 52 and 53 set. The 53 Musial is one of my favorites. I
also like the 53 and 55 Hoyt Wilhem cards because of the backgrounds. Mickey Vernon's 55 card screams with color!
Good luck highend if you decide to grab any red man cards.

Lol! I guess I should update my sets over there!
Red man cards are my favorite but unfortunately I like a lot of stuff and decided to put my efforts into rebuilding and completing the 52 red man set in near mint grade or better. They are nice
cards for sure and the artwork is great. The size is a nice small set with loads of hall of famers. Too bad there is no Mantle or Jackie Robinson!
Sold most of those recently to upgrade my 52 set which I need to update. That and decided to add to my 75 unopened collection.....that is if grote leaves any crumbs behind. I was just going to pm
you on the 75 Topps rack you were offering when I saw it was gone....lol....

"Molon Labe"
I tried it too.
I have many couponless 1952s ....95% I removed from a scrapbook (got them for about $2 ea in bulk), love the colors and also having cards scarcer than the extremely common 1952Topps cards, for a fraction of the $$
might as well show some "collector grade" stuff since this is an old post.....
Well here is an upgrade I just bought for my 52 set:

Nice cards Tony! Are there any low pop commons that are hard to find in NM-MT or better?

For the 54 set, the tough ones include both #19N - Gus Bell and Enos Slaughter as Ted mentions. Both are very tough along with the Philley, Mele, and Kell variations. But the #19's are the toughest.
The 52 set is a little harder than the other three years and the most sought after.
