For my fellow Morgan fanatics

I haven't bought a new coin in a while, since I'm STILL looking for a job/business, so I thought I'd share a pic of a coin I got last year from Rare Coins of New Hampshire (Jon), one of my favorite dealers. This is an 1896-O graded PCGS AU53. I think she is really AU58, as she is completely original (never cleaned or dipped), and is rare in this grade and higher. Rare Coins of New Hampshire only sells original coins like these.

  • I just noticed something. The PCGS price guide is screwed up on this date:

    Coin # Description Desig VF EF AU 60 62 63 64 65 66 67

    67 1896-O 17 23 1805 900 3750 7500 50000 175000 - -
    67 1896-O PL - - - 2225 3900 - - - - -
    67 1896-O DM - - - 3900 7150 - - - - -

I wonder what the correct price is for AU and 60? image

    Steve,

Thanks. You're a great dealer yourself. BTW, my email address changed (see my profile). If you wish, you can put me back on your NEWPS mailing list (although I can't buy any right now).

  • << Nice one. Looks better than AU53, imho. >>

Thank you. Jon of RCNH told me the reason she graded AU53 was probably because she has not been dipped. A dip might get an AU55 or AU58 grade, but RCNH (like myself) does not dip coins to try to get better grades. I prefer original coins. That's cheating! image

Tell me he didn't really say that? image

A lot of people are under the impression you can dip coins and get a better grade. More often than not what they get is a bodybag.

I've always tried to avoid totally blast white Morgans.

I was always under the impression that circulated Morgans don't dip well.

They don't, and you wind up with a bodybag. I'm wondering if dollardude maybe misunderstood something he said.

Thanks, K6AZ. I didn't know that. I'm glad I don't dip coins. I'm with you, I only try to acquire original coins. I have many, many blast white Morgans that I believe are original (see my registry set). Can you safely dip these if they are uncirculated?

Uncirculated coins are a totally different ballgame, some can be dipped without detection, these are usually with light toning, spots or stains. Coins with heavy toning are better off left alone. On circulated coins, especially better date AUs, these should never, ever be dipped. As BAJJERFAN pointed out, AU Morgans do not dip well and are usually bodybagged at PCGS.
  • K6AZ, what Jon said was that some people dip coins like this one to try to get higher grades, and that RCNH never dips coins, nor do they recommend it. I also do not dip coins, nor do I recommend it. I'm talking here about OTHER scumbags who do dip.

OK, that is a big difference then. He said they try to dip coins to get higher grades, and they do. I can recall one certain board member here who shall remain nameless, that bought an early S mint in a old PCGS MS67 rattler, and dipped off textile toning trying to get a 68. It came back as a run of the mill, white 67.

I didn't comment on your coin. If you ask me, PCGS undergraded it. I have never seen a 53, especially a 96-O in 53, with that much breast feather detail.

By the way, I picked up a nice album toned 96-O in 55 a few weeks ago, you can see it in my registry set.
