Very nice...per Doug Winter's 1992 book, there are between 105 and 115 of those extant. While updated data would likely reveal considerably more, when you compare it to the known thousands of 16-D Merc dimes, your new coin is considerably more rare.

    Enjoy!

Pretty easy to overlook the scratch on a neat coin like thatimage. mike

Well, as I see it, you now have a choice:

    1. Sell the coin, cut off your right hand and promise never, ever to buy another antebellum New Orleans eagle, or

    2. Do the right thing, join the Southern Gold Society (pm me your e-mail address for a sample copy of our eNewsletter) and become fascinated with these mementos of a time when New Orleans was the Queen of the South, riverboats crowded the Mississippi and the eagle was the largest denomination coin that America produced!

    p.s., you suck!

    p.p.s., Nice Coin!

And the best part is I paid the price equal to AG 1916-D merc image ($453.50)
    _Price guides: EF _____ AU
    ______ PCGS: $775 ___ $4400
    ___ Redbook: $650 ___ $2500
    __ Graysheet: $350___ $1750

I think graysheet is a little image undervalued - at $350 I'll take ten of them

I may buy some more in the future if the price is right, gold is fun this coin is ef/au

Personally, I think that VF to AU gold from this era has a lot of personality and history. The coins obviously saw some circulation, so they weren't just bank reserves or sitting in a collection all this time, and they usually don't have major problems. If you can find them with "original skin", you've got a very memorable and desirable coin!

Now, buying them at Grey Sheet Bid, that takes some luck!
