Oldschool excange rates?

This is something I've wondered about while buying coins but never seem to have the time to research on my own.. what was the relative buying power of, say, a kreuzer in southern Germany circa 1865? How did that compare with the buying power of 1 cent in America at that time?

Unfortunately, I can't contribute much to this thread. But if anyone has info on either exchange rates of old denominations versus today's dollar or simply some stories of what those coins could buy in their day I think it would be fascinating. And I'm sure others would enjoy it too.

Has anyone here ever looked into these things? If so could you share a few stories?
