Semi-OT: The people that once used our coins

Last night, we rented Gangs of New York. Saw some coins in one scene, and had to slow-play through it to see if the coins were correct for the era. Hard to tell (VHS, not DVD here) but I did notice a Seated Dollar, correct for the 1860s portrayed in the movie. I was surprised, expecting to see a Morgan. It did make me realize that those who used Seated coins lived in a pretty uncivilized place!

I always imagine what lincoln or washington or even kennedy thought when they reached in their pockets and pulled out some change for a cheeseburger. Did they think....what an awful depiction of myself on this coin!!! Just think I might have a cent or quarter or half that one of these men might have used at the 7/11!!! WoW!!!

I often think of the folks who once carried some of the classic coins I have in my collection. My oldest US coin is an 180? (2 or 3) large cent, thats so worn down it is actually smaller in diameter than it should be, almost worn slick too. I like to think of what 1 cent may have bought back in 1803, a huge bag of candy for a kid, maybe? How many hands had to have handled this thing over the past 200 years? How many trips around the country from place to place, or maybe it never got very far from the mint and just rattled around locally?
