I believe the ANACS Plate Coin was a "P" mint but I could be wrong. There are three expert Ike Collectors on this forum and one will answer soon.

Probably. You can check Breen's Encyclopedia.

I do remember that there was a Proof IKE without an S-mintmark in one of those dates, maybe 1974 (?). It was found in a store cash register in DC somewhere....there are other rarities like this in the Ike series as I recall.

I think that unless they are errors; the only 40% silver 1974 would be the "S" mint. The same goes for the 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1976. Someone with more error knowledge than me can probably help you more. A 40% silver "P" or "D" mint would certainly be interesting...

    WOW! You guys are fast.............!

I have a complete Ike PCGS registry set. Normally, the 1974, 1974-D, and one of the 1974-S proofs are copper-nickel clad (75% copper + 25% nickel bonded to an inner core of pure copper), while the other 1974-S proofs and 1974-S are 40% silver clad (80% silver + 20% copper bonded to an inner core of 20.9% silver + 79.1% copper). I don't know of any, but there could be some that fall into the category of "Mint Error".

As far as I know, all the documented off-metal Ikes are Denver mint.

You would need to be extremely careful in purchasing a supposed Philly off-metal because someone could easily alter a genuine silver Ike by removing the S mintmark.

Is this a coin you have seen?

Wrong Planchet Mint Error and they're out there. Whether or not the 74 is offered in a P mint I'm not sure but have personally seen, at Long Beach, the "D" mint in 40%.

Working is the answer to the question, so I can afford more Ikes.

    Here is the scoop:

No such thing as a "P" mint silver Ike. All the "D" mint ikes were silver planchets that were rejected for proof coinage at the San Fransisco Mint. They were mixed in with Clad planchets accidentally and sent to Denver to be coined as regular issue coins. This occured in 1974, 1976 and 1977. The supposed 1972 that is pictured in Hagers book is a fake.

On the proofs, there are 2 varieties of "P" mint proofs. A 1976 Silver Type I of which three are know and a 1976 Silver Type II of which 1 is known.

In the book on Ikes that I am published in, one of the contributing authors states that he saw a 1974-P Silver Ike. There are no pictures, nor does anyone know where the coin is or who owns it, so I must surmise that the coins does not exist.

Please see links to scans. The 77-D is supposedly the discovery coin, although I've not been able to verifiy this!

Sell me a 76-D Silver and the proofs when you find then.

Thanks Braddick! I must say I appreciate the compliment and company in which I am named -- but I am far, really far from an Ike expert. I love Ikes, I have several sets, and I think they are one of the most underappreciated modern coins, I doubt I could add anything to this discussion.

Tad and Segoja are the true experts. imageimage

As long as we are throwing out compliments...Michael Thanks!

    I appreciate the confidence!

I won't say I know it all, because I don't, but I do know a little about Ikes!

Wait for the book, then I'll take more credit!

I can sum up the Ike Series as this: It is not complicated yet it is complex.

Are you writing a book or am I reading too much into this? (I will buy the book if that is the answer)

Hello supercoin,as to your question of is this 1974-p 40% silver IKE dollar a coin i have seen. The answer is yes. I am by no means an expert, but only a collecter.I have had some coins i bought or in this case gotten in the local bank back in the late 1970's to early 1980's for face value, that i have kept until now.A couple of months ago i was looking through some of my coins i got like this such as IKES, KENNEDY HALVES,SBA DOLLARS when i noticed one of the IKE dollars was silver,i looked closer and thought that is odd , no mint mark.I never heard of such a coin so i e-mailed some folks such as, ALAN HERBERT,HERITAGE AUCTIONS, BOWERS & MERENA,but no one believed me.So, last month (NOV.2003) i sent this coin to PCGS for certification.I did not here from them yet as of 12-05-03, so i called and the man told me it was in the verification room. Do you know if this is good or bad?Thank you for your time .

I would assume he meant where a finalizer verifies the grade, but I wouldn't read too much into it until you get it back. They aren't the most organized organization. image

You took the right action, good luck with it... if it proves legitimate that'd be an amazing (and lucrative) find!
