Whats the best coin you can buy for $5,000?

I vote for a 1785 Bar Cent in AU:

Its a classic, its beautiful, its historic, its old and its rare.

Edited to add: This is not my coin.

That's an easy one: an all white PCGS MS-65 1861-O half dollar, PQ, of course.

Man Colonial, it's hard to argue with your choice! What a beautiful coin. I would still like to have a 1909 S VDB MS-65 Red PCGS. I try not to be greedy, but this coin continues to increase in value and probably won't be able to be bought for $5,000 much longer.

    Tom,

I got one at the Bowers auction early this year @ Baltimore? It's not white, though. It's a bit dark, but it's PL & it's a cool-looking coin.

You can also pick up an 1804 Draped Bust Plain 4 No Stems 1/2 Cent in MS 65 BN if you're luckyimage

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Do you have a picture of the 1861-O half? That is a really cool coin with lots of history. I have one I just upgraded from a MS-62 to its proper grade of MS-63.

    Seated coins are really cool!

All very worthy choices thus far. If I were in the market at that level I would look for the best quality KEY DATE coin that I could afford:

    1909S VDB Lincoln
    1914 Lincoln
    1922 Plain Lincoln
    1955 Double Die Lincoln
    Matte Proof Lincolns or Buffalos
    1916D Merc
    1916 SLQ
    1921 SLQ
    1921 Walker
    1893S Morgan
    1894P Morgan
    Dahlonega/Charlotte gold

are a few morsels that come to mind off the top of my head

Well $5000 mite get you a decent 89-CC in AU50 but I wouldn't count on havin anything left over.

Considering the way prices are going It should get you a nice 1893-S in vf35. You could buy a nice 1894 in 63 and have something left tho. A nice 1895-O in AU58 would be a possibility too.

I'd go for the rarest coin I could find in EF/AU or better. Some examples in the seated quarter series would be an 1860-S, 1872-S, or 1872-CC. There would be a ton of dates in gold too. The other suggestions here (bar cent, 09S-VDB) are certainly classics too but I like the rarity thing.

BTW, this one sold recently by Superior Galleries for $4750 plus the buyer's premium.

I was thinking the same thing. Some of the better dates of Peace Dollars in MS65/66 seem to do well too and very attractive in those grades.

Wide open question. I would go after a nice 1800's proof in the seated series, whichever one floats your boat. Or a proof barber. those are pretty.

I would buy a MS66R IHC - desirable both to IHC collectors and type collectors. The lack of supply attests to the demand.

Well, now, that depends on who you are, doesn't it? Would you give your eighty-year-old aunt a Humvee? Or your, big, brawny lumberjack friend a Miata? I think not! image

I can think of worse things than a high-end bar cent, I suppose.

PS- I like dollardude's suggestion a little better.

If somebody is willing to donate $5K, I'll be more than happy to give a full report on what I bought with it, and why! image

... Oh yeah, you could have all six coins in my sig line picture, and still have about $1,000-1,500 left. Lots of early proofs and an EF 445 year old silver thaler. The thaler alone costs less than half what a Bust dollar in Good does, and it is the very coin the word "dollar" came from! (plus, it's a little bigger than a silver dollar).

I dare not tell you how much more bang for your buck you would get with $5K on the Darkside!

I like the seated liberty and Barber coinage in higher grade proof with outstanding eye appeal. These coins are require strong money to loosten them but in my opinion will require even stronger money in the future. When I mention outstanding eye appeal I mean original coins with great color and gem proof or better.

How about a beat-up and well-loved George III Indian Peace medal, given to Indians allied with Britain in the Revolutionary War or War of 1812? If you prefer things with Americans on them, a well-worn Presidential series Indian Peace medal in silver would suffice. A U.S. Grant Indian Peace medal in silver would leave a grand or more left over to put into a couple fully plated catalogues by Henry Chapman.

Well since you asked, I have fulfilled the requirements.

The California Fractional 1860 $1 Oct. BG-1102. It is a MS-66 finest known with a pop 1 with only 1 in MS-65 and more in MS-64 and below. It was slabbed by PCGS a long time ago in 1994 in the older slab and not reubmitted since.

It sold for $4887, a very reasonable price given its rarity.

Patterns selling for around $5000 also do the trick.
1861-O $20 in the best grade you can get also is a great coin with lots of history.

Many of the other coins listed by FC57Coins also fill the bill. But I would add the 1918/7 quarter in high circulated and the 1942/1 dime in mint state grades as worthy coins as well.

a better date trade dollar pcgs ms64 super nice high end ms64 with an original thick skin white or toned

that would be a totally monster undervalued coin and plain RARE!!!!

a really nice original looking above average cameo strongly mirrored copper nickel indian head cent in proof 66 a real 66 and not one of those dark spotted streaked coins most probably an 1862 which is okie as long as it has the as struck look/color a silvery color with a light tannish hue like it looked when it left the dies .............................. wow!!

this would be a really good rare coin not usually seen with excellent potential.

a really strongly cameoed high end proof 64 trade dollar with amazing eye appeal
now that is a really good scarce coin!

1803 S-264 draped bust large cent in Good. Almost talked myself into buying one at that price a couple months ago. Finally decided against it because as an R-5- it just isn't rare enouh to justify that price. In fact an 1801 S-217 in AG would be better (14 known).

I would have to go with the Bar cent if it looked like the one you have posted. If not, a tawdry night in las vegas with a half a dozen skanky prostitues comes in a close second.

    Tom,

I went to the Bowers auction from which I got the coin & they don't have an image because they said the coin didn't sell. If it didn't sell, why is in my safety deposit box?

Elcontador, I don't quite understand, did your 1861-O half sell or do you still have it? I can't imagine a coin of that caliber not selling. If I could afford it....

Tom, that's what puzzled me. I bought the coin for the price listed in the lot summary; the same price which was starred to indicate that it didn't sell. I am at a loss for why they said the coin didn't sell when I bought it. Since they don't have an image, I can't share it with you and the other forum members.
