Question for those of you who have dealt with dipped coins gone bad...

Greetings, All --

I won this MS66* PL 1880-S Morgan from Heritage:

1880-S NGC MS66* PL

It's hardly noticeable in person, but you can see on the scan that there's what looks like residue from a dipping. I plan to send it to NGC for their appearance review.

What do you think can be done about the stains? Do you think that another dipping followed by a thorough washing away of the acid will do the trick?

Dan

I don't really see a problem here. If there's something I'm missing, you can submit coins to NCS for an evaluation.

Dude, that's not dip residue (nor die rust-commonly seen on PL morgans). However, if that toning bothers you (whether it's natural or not) a dip would certainly remove it.

    Looks great to me.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Dan, you must be talking about that stuff that looks like fungas or something growing on the coin. I agree I think you should send it to NGC so they can fix it. I had a prooflike morgan that I did not look at for about two years and when I did look it had the same fungas. mike
