So I went to the bank today to buy some 50 cent pieces

They didnt have any but said they would be more than happy to order me some rolls if I was willing to buy $2000.00 worth. I passed.

Only a $500 minimum at my bank. Of course, all I've ever gotten was junk so I don't even try anymore.

  • I would have been willing to buy 500 dollars worth. If nothing else they would be a welcome edition to my 1889 Morgan CC savings fund.

  • Yep, same here. Except that they require an order of $3,000

I still may do it over the holidays when I've got some time to go through them.

wow - so how much does it cost for them to take them back? or do you use them for your shopping, gas, coffee,...
  • Push comes to shove I could go to Atlantic City about 40 miles away and buy all the rolls of halves that I want no minimum. I seriously doubt I would get anything but slot machine chewed up moderns though.

  • I went to the casinos in Vicksburg and played the 50C slots and had pulled out about a dozen silver and partially silver halves. Then I went to a different one and didn't get but one .

And you call yourselves collectors. A real Kennedy collector would scour through $2000 dollars worth of coins to not find anything good just for the fun of it. Hell, he'd probably do it twice just for the joy of it.image As for me, well I must not be a collector because I wouldn't waste my time on it either.

  • Now if I could buy rolls of silver dollars I might sort through $2000 worth.

  • My bank always has lots of half dollars, but I never get any. The trouble is, all they ever have is old junk. Never any bright new uncirculated coins. You get some rolls of halves, all they are is old worn Walking Liberties and Franklins. Who wants that junk?

Yeah and I went fishing last Saturday and caught one on every cast. They were too Big to keep so I had to throw all of 'em back. We had a camera to prove it, but a fish grabbed it in his mouth and flopped back into the water.......
  • There is an element of luck, but you might want to do a Sat am trip to a few "out of the way" banks,
    maybe 30-50 miles from home.

Doing a day trip Fri: one place in a tiny town had $430 in halves, took them all, most were the old yellow rolls, with very old tape intact. Definitely promising !!

After opening them, the yield was a single 40%....ugh!!image

    All were 70's halves.....

I think I would find myself a new bank that would provide complete services. I have no problem acquiring half dollars from my bank. The teller has to go down to the vault and get them. I guess some banks don't make their personel get off their dead-A$$ and provide the service we pay all those big bank fees for. Time to change banks.
  • iT'S FUNNY TO SEE THE REACTION AT STORES. yOU SHOULD TRY IT WITH $2 BILLS. sOME THINK IT'S FAKE & CALL THE MGR.image
  • Some advantages to living in a small town. One is, the last time I asked for a few rolls of half dollars I got them. One of the rolls had eight 64's and the remaining we're 65, 66, and 67. Another is, one of my wifes trip to the Dairy Queen she paid for her purchase with a hand ful on half dollars. At that point the clerk turns and calls out to the manager and asks, "do we take these".image

I hit up my BofA today for halves.....I live in a small town.
She had to go to the vault but came back with 7 rolls for me.
I found about 20 1971d and 15-20 1972. The rest were spread out.
    I did find 2 1968d though.

I also found out they were willing to order Ikes for me as long as it was at least $100....they said no guarantees they would get them, but they would try.
So, maybe I will get some Ikes to look through now image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
