Is textile toning on mint bag toned Morgans being mistaken for fingerprints??

fivecentsfivecents Posts: 11,207 ✭✭✭✭✭
Some of the fingerprinted bag toned Morgans I see posted on this board look more like textile toning than fingerprints. Textile toning seems to have the same basic pattern as fingerprints on the bag toned Morgans. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

I sometimes get confused about this myself. I have a Morgan right now that I thought had a light print, but a friend looked at it and said it was a little bit of textile. I think the difference is that a print will have somewhat curved lines while a textile pattern will tend to be more straight.

"I think the difference is that a print will have somewhat curved lines while a textile pattern will tend to be more straight."

I agree with Russ and thus conclude that what I've seen are indeed fingerprints.

  • I usually look for the "dots" from the textile patterns. When you have seen a few you would know what I mean. There is also a cris cross pattern to textile toning.

    here is textile

I hope you can tell where the textile is on this one

I would disagree with that logic. Canvas bags can bend and have folds in them, so textile toning can be curved.

jb...So do I, but Alot of the fingerprinted bag toned Morgans seem to have the same dot pattern as textile toning.

The canvas bag patterns and fingerprints are easily told apart, fingerprints on toned coins usually show up as black and have curved lines as well as tiny dots. Textile toning has a very distinct larger dot pattern as JB's examples clearly show.
